The Shawshank Redemption

MAN #1: Sit.
MAN #2: We see by your file you've served twenty years of a life sentence .
RED: Yes, sir.
MAN #3: You feel you've been rehabilitated ?
RED: Yes, sir. Absolutely. I've learned my lesson. I can honestly say I'm a changed man. I'm no longer a danger to society. That's the God's honest truth .
CON #1: Hey, Red. How'd it go?
RED: Same old shit, different day.
CON #1: Yeah, I know how you feel. I'm up for rejection next week.
CON #2: Yeah, I got rejected last week. It happens.
CON #3: Hey, Red, bump me a deck .
RED: Get the fuck out of my face, man! You're into me for five packs already.
CON #3: Four.
RED: Five!
RED (V.O.): There's must be a con like me in every prison in America. I'm the guy who can get it for you. Cigarettes, a bag of reefer if that's your thing, a bottle of brandy to celebrate your kid's high school graduation. Damn near anything within reason. Yes sir, I'm a regular Sears & Roebuck.

RED: So when Andy Dufresne came to me in 1949 and asked me to smuggle Rita Hayworth into the prison for him, I told him no problem.

It is God's truth that my next door neighbor was a murderer at large!
4. up for:打算;准备 I'm up for rejection next week. The house is up for sale.
5. bump me a deck:这是非常俚语的讲法。bump这里的意思相当于lend,deck是指a pack of cigarettes。
You have already borrowed five packs from me.
1. Sears & Roebuck: born during the latter part of the 19th century, Sears & Roebuck Company is one of the most trusted economic institutions in U.S. history and eventually grew to be the 7th largest corporation in the world during the 20th century.
2. Rita Hayworth: one of classic Hollywood beautiful leading ladies.

RED: And that's how it came to pass, that on the second-to-last day of the job, the convict crew that tarred the plate factory roof in the spring of '49 wound up sitting in a row at ten o'clock in the morning, drinking icy cold Bohemian style of beer, courtesy of the hardest screw that ever walked a turn at Shawshank State Prison.
HADLEY: Drink up while it's cold, ladies.
RED: The colossal prick even managed to sound magnanimous.
RED: We sat and drank with the sun on our shoulders, and felt like free men. We could'a been tarring the roof of one of our own houses. We were the l ords of all creation .
RED: As for Andy, he spent that break hunkered in the shade, a strange little smile on his face, watching us drink his beer.
HEYWOOD: Want a cold one, Andy.
ANDY: No thanks. I gave up drinking.
RED: You could argue he'd done it to curry favor with the guards. Or maybe make a few friends among us cons. Me, I think he did it just to feel normal again...if only for a short while.
如:“He wound up drunk.(他不知不觉醉了。)”
3. lords of all creation:造物主。
She always curries favor with her manager, which annoys most of her colleagues.
瑞德在这个片段的独白里所说的几句话,如...felt like free men./ We were the Lords of all Creation. / I think he did it just to feel normal again...if only for a short while.

RED: What the hell's going on?
SNOOZE: You tell me. One second he was fine, then out came the knife.
RED: Brooks, Brooks, we can talk about this right?
BROOKS: Nothing left to talk about! It's damn all talked out! I'm gonna kill him, cut his throat!
RED: Hey, wait, wait! What's he done to you?
BROOKS: It's what they done! I got, I got no choice!
ANDY: Brooks, you're not gonna hurt Heywood, we all know that. Even Heywood knows it, right Heywood?
HEYWOOD: Sure. I know that. Sure.
ANDY: You know why you're not gonna hurt him? Because he's a friend of yours, because Brooks Hatlen is a reasonable man.
RED: That's right. That's right! Is that right, guys?
ANDY: So put the knife down. Brooks, Brooks, look at me. Put the knife down! Brooks, look at his neck, for God's sake . Look at his neck. He's bleeding.
BROOKS: But it's the only way... the only way they'd let me stay.
ANDY: This is crazy. Come on. You don't wanna do this. Put it down. Look at me. Take it easy. You'll be all right.
HEYWOOD: Him? What about me? Crazy old fool! Goddamn near cut my throat!
RED: You've had it worse from shaving. What the hell did you do to set him off anyway?
HEYWOOD: I didn't do nothin' ! Just came in to say fare-thee-well. Ain't you heard? His parole came through!
ANDY: I just don't understand what happened in there, that's all.
HEYWOOD: Old man's crazy as a rat in a tin shithouse, is what.
RED: Heywood, that's enough out of you.
CON: I heard he had you shitting your pants.
HEYWOOD: Fuck you!
RED: You do knock it off ! Brooks ain't no bug . He's just...he's just institutionalized .
HEYWOOD: Institutionalized, my ass .
RED: The man's been in here fifty years. Heywood, fifty years! This is all he knows. In here, he's an important man. He's an educated man. Outside, he's nothing but a used-up con with arthritis in both hands. Probably couldn't get a library card if he tried. You know what I'm trying to say?
FLOYD: Red, I do believe you're talking out of your ass .
RED: You believe whatever you want, Floyd. But I'm telling you these walls are funny. First you hate 'em, then you get used to 'em. Enough time passes, you get so you depend on 'em. That's "institutionalized".
JIGGER: Shit. I could never get like that.
ERNIE: Oh, yeah? Say that when you've been here as long as Brooks has.
RED: Goddamn right. They send you here for life, and that's exactly what they take. Part that counts, anyway.
1. What the hell's going on?
这个句子的意思很好懂,What's going on相当于What happened, the hell表示强调,意思为“到底”。
1)a / one hell of (a)
e.g. Forrest Gump is a hell of a good soldier.
2)go to hell (粗)去你的,见鬼去吧。
3)feel / look like hell
e.g. After the operation, I looked like hell for a long time.

2. For God's sake!
Oh my God / Jesus / Christ / Jesus H Christ / Holy Shit / God / Good Heavens / Oh my/ Oh boy
3. set off
e.g. The news set off a rush activity.
4. didn't do nothing
5. knock it off
7. institutionalized
8. my ass

RED: I have no idea to this day what those two Italian ladies were singin' about. Truth is, I don't want to know. Some things are best left unsaid. I like to think they were singin' about something so beautiful it can't be expressed in words, and makes your heart ache because of it.
RED (V.O.) I tell you, those voices soared. Higher and farther than anybody in a gray place dares to dream. It was like some beautiful bird flapped into our drab little cage and made those walls dissolve away...and for the briefest of moments - every last man at Shawshank felt free.
RED (V.O.) It pissed the warden off something awful.
WARDEN: Open the door. Open it up! Dufrense, open this door! Turn that off! I am warning you, Dufrense, turn that off!
HADLEY: Dufrense, you are mine now.
RED (V.O.) Andy got two weeks in the hole for that little stunt.
HADLEY: On your feet.
CON: Hey, look who's here.
CON: Maestro.
HEYWOOD: You, you couldn't play somethin' good, huh? Like Hank Williams?
ANDY: They broke the door down before I could take requests.
FLOYD: Was it worth two weeks in the hole?
ANDY: Easiest time I ever did.
HEYWOOD: Oh, shit. No such thing as easy time in the hole. A week in the hole is like a year.
SNOOZE: Damn straight .
ANDY: I had Mr. Mozart to keep me company .
RED: So they let you tote that record player down there, huh?
ANDY: It was in here...in here. That's the beauty of music. They can't get that from you. Haven't you ever felt that way about music?
RED: Well I played a mean harmonica as a younger man. Lost my interest in it, though. Didn't make much sense in here.
ANDY: Here's where it makes most sense. You need it so you don't forget.
RED: Forget?
ANDY: Forget that there are places in the world that aren't made out of stone, that there's… there's something inside that they can't get to and they can't touch. That's yours.
RED: What are you talking about?
ANDY: Hope.
RED: Hope. Let me tell you something, my friend. Hope is a dangerous thing. Hope can drive a man insane. It's got no use on the inside. You'd better get used to the idea.
ANDY: Like Brooks did?
1. Some things are best left unsaid.
2. piss off
e.g. You've tried to piss me off starting from this morning!
3. straight
e.g. Make sure the data is straight in the report.
4. keep sb company

1)Two's company, three's a crowd.
2)A man is known by the company he keeps.
5. make sense

e.g. No matter how I tried to read the sentence, it didn't make any sense to me.

e.g. It makes sense to take care of your health.

在make和sense 之间加上不同的表示程度的词,它的意思也会有变化,如:make a lot of sense,make some sense,make no sense就分别表示“很有道理”,“有一定道理”,“没有道理”。

RED: He's got his fingers in a lot of pies , from what I hear.
ANDY: What you hear isn't half of it. He's got scams you haven't dreamed of. Kickbacks on his kickbacks. There's a river of dirty money flowing through this place.
RED: Can be a problem having all that money. 'Cause sooner or later you're gotta have to explain where it came from.
ANDY: That's where I come in. I channel it, filter it, funnel it...stocks, securities, tax-free municipals...I send that money out into the real world. And when it comes back...
RED: Clean as a virgin's honeybunch?
ANDY: Cleaner. By the time Norton retires, I will have made him a millionaire.
RED: If they ever catch on him, he's gonna wind up here wearing a number himself.
ANDY: Oh Red, I thought you had a little more faith in me than that.
RED: I know you're good, but all that paper leaves a trail. Now anybody gets curious, FBI, IRS, whatever. It's going to lead to somebody.
ANDY: Sure it is. But not to me, and certainly not to the warden.
RED: All right, who?
ANDY: Randall Stevens.
RED: Who?
ANDY: The "silent" silent partner. He's the guilty one, your Honor. The man with the bank accounts. It's where the filtering process starts. They trace anything, it's gonna lead to him.
RED: But who is he?
ANDY: He's a phantom, an apparition. Second cousin to Harvey the Rabbit. (off Red's look) I conjured him out of thin air. He doesn't exist...except on paper.
RED: Andy, you can't just make a person up .
ANDY: Sure you can, if you know how the system works, and where the cracks are. It's amazing what you can accomplish by mail. Mr. Stevens has a birth certificate, driver's license, social security number.
Red: You're shitting me.
ANDY: If they ever trace any of those accounts, they'll wind up chasing a figment of my imagination.
RED: Well, I'll be damned! Did I say you were good? Shit! You're Rembrandt.
ANDY: The funny thing is on the outside, I was an honest man. Straight as an arrow. I had to come to prison to be a crook.
1. a finger in the pie
e.g.He is the guy with a finger in the pie.
2. have faith in
1)I'm sure she will do as she promised. I've got great faith in her.
2)You are going to past the spoken English test. I have faith in you!

Let's make up the time we lost last week.
4) 收拾,整理 to make up a bed / table
You are making up the story! That's not true.

Dutch baroque artist, who ranks as one of the greatest painters in the history of Western art. His full name was Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn. He possessed a profound understanding of human nature that was matched by a brilliant technique-not only in painting but in drawing and etching-and his work made an enormous impact on his contemporaries and influenced the style of many later artists. Perhaps no painter has ever equaled Rembrandt's chiaroscuro effects or his bold impasto.

ANDY: My wife used to say I'm a hard man to know. Like a closed book. Complained about it all the time. She's beautiful. God, I loved her. But I just didn't know how to show it, that's all. I killed her, Red. I didn't pull the trigger. But I drove her away. That's why she died. Because of me, the way I am.
RED: That doesn't make you a murderer. Bad husband, maybe. Felt bad about it if you want to. But you didn't pull the trigger.
ANDY: No. I didn't. Somebody else did, and I wound up in here. Bad luck, I guess.
RED: Yeah.
ANDY: It floats around. Has to land on somebody. It was my turn, that's all. I was in the path of the tornado . I didn't expect the storm would last as long as it has. You think you'll ever get out of here?
RED: Me? Yeah. One day when I got a long, white beard and two or three marbles rolling around upstairs . They'll let me out.
ANDY: Tell you where I'd go. Zihuatanejo.
RED: Zihua...?
ANDY: Zihuatanejo. It's in Mexico. A little place on the Pacific Ocean. You know what the Mexicans say about the Pacific? They say it has no memory. That's where I want to live the rest of my life. A warm place with no memory. Open up a little hotel right on the beach. Buy some worthless old boat and fix it up new. Take my guests out charter fishing.
RED: Zihuatanejo?
ANDY: In a place like that, I could use a man that knows how to get things.
RED: I don't think I could make it on the outside, Andy. I've been in here most of my life. I'm an institutional man now. Just like Brooks was.
ANDY: Well, you underestimate yourself.
RED: I don't think so. In here I'm the guy who can get things for you, sure, but outside all you need is the Yellow Pages . Hell, I wouldn't even know where to begin. Pacific Ocean? Shit! About to scare me to death , somethin' that big.
ANDY: Not me. I didn't shoot my wife and I didn't shoot her lover, and whatever mistakes I made I've paid for them and then some. That hotel, that boat... I don't think that's too much to ask.
RED: I don't think you ought' a be doing this to yourself, Andy! This is shitty pipe dreams ! I mean Mexico's in the way the hell down there, and you're in here, and that's the way it is!
ANDY: Yeah, right. That's the way it is. It's down there, and I'm in here. I guess it comes down to a simple choice, really. Get busy living... or get busy dying.
1. tornado
2. two or three marbles rolling around upstairs
意思是go crazy in brain/head。英文中有个短语lose one's marbles,意思就是 go crazy in brain/head。Red这里说two or three marbles rolling around upstairs是活用了lose one's marbles这个短语。
3. charter

4. Yellow Pages

I was worried to death.
I was scared to death.
I was bored to death.
6. pipe dream
Stop dreaming that pipe dream that you will become a millionaire someday without hard work!(别成天幻想着不费劲将来就能成为百万富翁!)

Who Says I Can't Ride a Rainbow。

Duplex

Narrator: So, you're finally settling down. You've saved up a little nest egg and are ready to dive into the real estate market. Let's do a little shopping around.
The American dream home, two bedrooms, two bathrooms, one doghouse, one garage, two garbage cans. It's cozy, safe, and just barely within your overstretched budget .
Not for you? For the same price, you can buy 200, 000 acres of prime Sahara wasteland. Put up a cottage. Nothing, but you and the sky. It's like a beach without the ocean. And talk about quiet neighbors.
Too remote? Oh, I understand. You need the thrill and excitement of the big city. With that same nest egg, you can get a slice of prime real estate. Not this real estate. Cozy and affordable, this lovely fixer-upper is the perfect place for a dynamic couple like you. No need to putter around the house. It's all right there where you stand.
What's the matter? Feeling a little cramped? Well, just a stone's throw away, just one bridge or a tunnel ride, just outside the big, bustling city, there is a place with wide-open spaces, friendly natives, and spacious dwellings. And it's all within your price range . It's almost too good to be true .
1. nest egg
I'm building the nest egg for going abroad in the days ahead.
2. within...budget, with someone's price range
This dress is expensive, but it's within my price range.”
3. putter around
I putter around on the street of the city after sunset.
4. too good to be true
It's incredible. It's unbelievable!(太不可思议了,太难以置信了。) Wow, wow, wow, it's too good to be true!
New York City
Unlike most American cities, which make up only a part of a particular county, New York is made up of five separate counties, which are called boroughs. Originally the city included only the borough of Manhattan, located on an island between the Hudson and East rivers. In 1898 a number of surrounding communities were incorporated into the city as the boroughs of Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx and Staten Island. The Bronx is the only borough of New York City on the mainland of the United States. Manhattan and Staten Island are surrounded by water, while Queens and Brooklyn are part of Long Island.
Queens is the largest of the five boroughs. Brooklyn is the second largest and most populous of the five boroughs. It is the home of such major cultural institutions as the Brooklyn Museum, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. Coney Island is well known for its beaches and amusement parks. Staten Island is the third largest and least populous of the five boroughs. The Bronx is the fourth largest and the northernmost of the five boroughs.
Manhattan, or New York County, is the smallest of the five boroughs of New York City. The borough consists principally of the island of Manhattan, but also includes Governors Island, Randalls Island, Wards Island, Roosevelt Island, U Thant Island, and Marble Hill, a small enclave on the edge of the Bronx mainland. Manhattan is the glittering heart of the metropolis. It is the site of virtually all of the hundreds of skyscrapers that are the symbol of the city. Among the more famous of these are the Empire State Building (1931), the Chrysler Building (1930), and Citicorp Center (1977). (The 110-story twin towers of the World Trade Center were also among New York's famous skyscrapers until they were destroyed in a terrorist attack in 2001.)

Kenneth: When I told you I had a particular building in mind for you. This is the one I was talking about. It's a historical home on one of the best blocks in all of Brooklyn.
Alex: Remember what we talked about.
Nancy: I know, poker face .
Kenneth: Built-ins, built-ins.
Nancy: Oh, the kitchen's a little small.
Kenneth: Well, rip off this awful room divider, and you've got an eat-in kitchen. And over here you have your library.
Alex: Wow.
Nancy: For your books.
Kenneth: Oh, you like books?
Alex: I have a little collection of first-edition novels.
Nancy: Alex is a writer.
Kenneth: The parlor.
Nancy: Oh, my God.
Alex: So, this staircase. This leads to where?
Kenneth: I thought you realized. This is a duplex.
Nancy: As in two floors for the price of one?
Kenneth: I believe it's right there in the listing sheet.
Alex: So, why was it sealed off? Were there, like, a slew of murders up there or something?
Kenneth: No, there's just a sweet, little old lady that lives upstairs.
Nancy: A tenant?
Kenneth: Mm-hmm.
Alex: So, rent control means we can't kick her out, right?
Nancy: Alex!
Kenneth: That's a legitimate question. No, you cannot evict her. She has to decide to leave or, God forbid... Poor thing hasn't been feeling well lately. She's gotta be close to 100 years old.
1. poker face
When you are making a bargain, you'd better keep a poker face.
2. rip off
A:rip something off
Some people rip off the goods from the supermarket to make a living.
3. a slew of
I've got a slew of classes for today.

Waitress: What can I get you?
Alex: Listen, I got 12 hours to finish this book. I was wondering if I could sit here and write all day.
Waitress: Be my guest.
Alex: Thanks.
Connelly: Nancy. I was going to ring you. I'm afraid there's a bit of problem up here.
Nancy: I have to go on a job interview, so I'II take care of it later.
Connelly: Oh, that's okay. I'II ring the rug man. Good. Knock it in. Knock it in. Good. I don't want to slip and break me neck.
Connelly: No, we wouldn't want that. This is the problem area here. It's loose as a Dublin whore. Oh, go on, knock it in. Yes! Now, just knock it in. Go on, knock. Come on, use some elbow grease.
Nancy: Aah! Okay, I will.
Alex: You threw her down the stairs?
Nancy: No. But I imagined it. And I Liked it. I'm evil. I'm a horrible, horrible person. Thank you.
Alex: Come on, she's practically ruined our lives. It's perfectly natural to have thoughts like that.
Nancy: Really?
Alex: Yeah. I mean, I've even had a couple.
Connelly: Aaaah!
Nancy: Like what?
Alex: Just, you know, snapping her neck or electrocuting her. You know, just beating her to death, decapitating her, drowning her, bludgeoning her, in a humane way... dicing her up into little, little pieces . But asphyxiating her first, so she didn't feel anything.
Nancy: I'm glad you clarified that. You're evil, too.
Alex: I'm finished. That's what I am. And it was incredible. The last 60 pages just poured out of me.
Nancy: Let's open that really great champagne and celebrate.
1. What can I get you?
因为在这种情境中,我们一般用的表达方式是:Can I help you? 而真正到了国外之后,我们会惊奇的发现,他们说“What can I get you?”的频率要比“Can I help you?”
2. Be my guest.
Be my guest!
3. dice someone up into pieces
切成丁”的意思,所以dice someone up into pieces这个短语就是“把…… 比如老板经常让员工加班,这让大家极其苦恼,于是每每要加班时就会说:真想把他给剁了-- I really wanna dice my boss up into pieces.
4. pour out of
A:pour something out,意思是“倾诉,尽情地说”。 (You can pour all your worries to me!)。
Unexpectedly, all the zingers just poured out of me.

Kenneth: Hey, who wants to run upstairs and say hello?
Nancy: Well, we should get going .
Alex: We should. We have to... we should.
Nancy: Yeah.
Kenneth: Nonsense! You pulled the woman out of a burning building. You'd break her heart if you didn't take a moment to say goodbye. Come on! Mrs. Connelly, I brought you a surprise! Mrs. Connelly!! The hearing on this one. Look who's here. She's asleep. Sweetheart. She's stiff as a board.
Nancy: No. She's just hard-of-hearing. Mrs. Connelly!
Kenneth: She's dead. Oh, poor thing.
Nancy: No. She can't be dead.
Kenneth: I guess it was just her time. Come on, I'll call the Friedman's. You don't have to stay here for this. You've done enough. Come. Come, come, come. Must have been all the excitement.
Alex: I can't believe it.
Nancy: She was so full of life .
Alex: I mean, for all our differences, that old lady really had a lot of spunk.
Nancy: A lot of it. Do you think she's up in heaven?
Alex: Well, I'll tell you something. Wherever she is, she's in a better place.
Kenneth: You should have seen their faces when I said she was a goner.
Policeman: So cheap, though I wish I could have been there.
Connelly: Trust me. It wasn't easy holding my breath all that long. Next time, I want a bigger cut of your commission, Kenny.
Kenneth: What are you talking about? We give you everything, Ma. There's barely enough left for Danny and I to have a cruise to the Caribbean.
Connelly: I'm the one putting my caboose on the line .
Kenneth: Oh, come on. You had it easy with Alex and Nancy.
Connelly: They were a nice couple. I do hope they'll be all right.
Kenneth: Ah, they'll be fine. He's a writer. They thrive on adversity.
Connelly: I hope his next book is better than his last one. Maybe this time he'll write about something he knows.
1. get going
那么除此之外,我们还可以说I get going或者是I'm off。
2. it is somebody's time
It is just my time。
3. be full of life
在此段中,big cut of your commission是“要更多的佣金”的意思。
5. put... on the line / lay... on the line
I put my life on the line.

Bridget: Another year, a brand new diary. Once again I was summoned, kicking and screaming, to my mother's turkey curry buffet, where I've had some of the most shaming experiences of my life.
Mother: Hello, darling. Lovely to see you.
Bridget: It was, as usual, crammed full with some of the most dangerous perverts in the UK, disguised as close, personal friends of my parents.
Una: Hello, Bridget.
Bridget: Hello, Una. Oh, no, thanks.
Una: Love the jumper .
Geoffrey: I prefer what's underneath it.
Bridget: Uncle Geoffrey!
Geoffrey: Hello, gorgeous.
Bridget: Hello.
Dad: Hello, darling.
Bridget: Hello, Dad. How's it going?
Dad: I wish I was dead.
Bridget: But this year, there was one crucial difference. Nice jumper.
Mark: My mother's taste never falters .
Bridget: Never. You always wonder how it's going to work out at the end of the story. Maria and Captain Von Trapp, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Mark Darcy and Bridget Jones. I've found my happy ending at last. And nothing in the world can spoil it . Well, almost nothing.
Richard: Bridget Jones, what the fuck are you doing?
Bridget: I, I can't see anywhere soft to land.
Richard: How about on your ass? Bridget, unless you want to get sacked at 6,000 feet, you will be on your way in exactly three seconds. Three, two, one... cue Bridget.

Bridget: Skydiving, a dangerous bane to the countryside and emergency services, or a safe and exhilarating hobby? Well... Let's see, shall we?
Richard: Go. Jump. For Christ's sakes, go! Ok. She's out. Unit Two, you got her?
Man: OK, we see her.
Richard: Bridget, open the chute. Open it. Open your fucking parachute! Pull the thingy or you will die!
Bridget: Oh. Honestly, you forget just one teeny, weeny detail and everyone treats you like an idiot.
Bridget: Where was I? Oh, yes... Mark Darcy. The question is: what happens after you walk off into the sunset?
Richard: Bridget? Earth to Bridget Sodding Jones. Bridget, you're on. You're live.
Bridget: Well, this is Bridget Jones for Sit Up Britain, reporting to you from a big vat of excrement.
Richard: Unit two, give me a close-up of the porker.
1.jumper
A:跳跃者
He's a great jumper. He certainly is a good walker。
2.falter
Her voice began to falter as she talked about her miserable past.
B:never falter
My mother's taste never falters. 也可说 His reputation never falters.
3.Nothing in the world can spoil it.
4.get sacked
5. You're on.
What's on?
6.You're live.
This is... on the spot.

Bridget: Who cares about the odd professional hiccup? The fact is I've been in a functional relationship with an adult male for six wonderful weeks, four fabulous days and seven precious hours, or to put it another way , 71 ecstatic shags . He's given up being snooty, and I've given up smoking. Well, he thinks I have anyway, which is practically the same thing... Mark Darcy is perfect. Not a fuckwit, alcoholic, workaholic, pervert or megalomaniac, but total sex god and human rights lawyer. He is a miracle, really.
Mark: Bridget, will you stop? Stop staring at me while I'm asleep. Go and find something to do.
Bridget: Sorry. So, as you can see, the incredible truth is the wilderness years are over. Bridget Jones is a love pariah no more.
Workmate: Morning, Bridget. Late again.
Bridget: Yes. Sorry. I was in bed with my boyfriend. He's a human rights lawyer, you know.
Workmate: Yes, we know.
Bridget: I cannot believe how fantastic shagging was last night. Maybe I'll ring him. No, no... Obviously it's important to tell one's boyfriend how nice he looks naked, but I have crucial, Pulitzer Prize winning journalism to do.
Mark: Hello?
Bridget: It's me. Just wondered how you are.
Mark: I'm fine, thanks. Everything all right with you?
Bridget: Fine, though, er... I've just had a rather graphic shag flashback. And you do have a genuinely gorgeous bottom.
Mark: Thank you. I'm actually with the Mexican ambassador, the head of Amnesty international and the Undersecretary for Trade and lndustry. And you're on speakerphone.
Bridget: Oh. Right, well... I'm quite busy with important stuff too...
1.put it another way

put it another way就是“换个说法”的意思,相当于我们学过的in other words。
2.shags
英国俚语,意思是have sex with someone。
3.Everything all right with you?
Everything all right with you?
4.be on speakerphone

Bridget: Everything under control , I see. Um... Excellent graph. Lovely legs.
Becky: Thank you.
Bridget: I am so sorry. I thought... Oh, I don't know what I thought. Now you're really angry with me.
Mark: No, no, I'm not angry.
Bridget: It's OK; you can say if you are. It's not the end of the world.
Mark: I'll get you a glass of wine.
Bridget: The thing is I ran into Janey Osborne, who said she'd just seen you with this girl, with really long legs, and Shazzer and Jude said I should get over here straightaway.
Mark: So, following the orders of the dating war command, you decided to execute a raid.
Bridget: You are angry.
Mark: No, I'm not angry, just disappointed.
Bridget: Disappointed? Oh, God, that's worse than angry.
Mark: I'm just disappointed I can't take you home this instant.
Bridget: Oh. What about all those lawyers?
Mark: Oh, plenty of time to butter them up at the Law Council Dinner next Friday. Don't want to go, do you?
Bridget: I'd love to. Oh, stupid Bridget, stupid friends. Wonderful, loyal Mark Darcy... who loves me just the way I am.
Mark: What on earth are you doing?
Bridget: Getting dressed.
Mark: Why are you dancing around in that tent, Bridget?
Bridget: Because I don't want you to see any of my wobbly bits.
Mark: That's been pointless, because I have a very high regard for your wobbly bits in all circumstances.
Bridget: Really?
Mark: Absolutely, and I think it's high time we had another look.
1. everything under control
2. the end of the world
Well, it's not the end of the world.
3. butter someone up
You have to butter your mother up before she gives you the money.
4. have a very high regard for..., it's high time to do...
那么下一句 it's high time to do... It's high time to get rid of our rivals.

Bridget: I've never been happier in my entire life. However, must not obsess or fantasise. Bridget Darcy. Mrs. Darcy. Mr. and Mrs. Darcy. Lord and Lady Darcy. Wonder what Mark Darcy would be like as a father. Father to his children, I mean, not to me. That would be a weird, Oedipus-like thought. At last, life is on track. Bridget Jones, fiancé, wife, mother. Bugger.
Cleaver: Ever fancied doing it in the dark with a total stranger? All right, perhaps not a total stranger.
Bridget: Back off , Cleaver, or I'll report you to a sexual harassment tribunal. I'm a serious journalist.
Cleaver: Is that your most serious skirt, Jones?
Bridget: Oh... Do you like it? I thought you hated television.
Cleaver: I hate watching television. Being on it is, hello, an entirely different position.
Bridget: Daniel thought the Madrid piece was outstanding, full of instinct, really really original.
Cleaver: Cheers, Jeremy. Thanks, I really appreciate that. That's really a hard work, that one. Tosser. Talking of which, how is Mark Darcy? You still...?
Bridget: Yes, I am. And I intend to be for a very, very long time.
Cleaver: Good. Excellent. You know what a fan I am of any woman married to Mark Darcy.
Bridget: That's not funny.
Cleaver: Seriously, Jones, speaking purely unselfishly, I worry about you. You do know that it's knowledge of fact that most lawyer's wives die of boredom?
Bridget: What about you? Still shagging anything that moves?
Cleaver: As a matter of fact, no. No shagging whatsoever. I'm in shag therapy. It turns out I have a problem. I go to meetings, talk about my feelings. Hug people who smell.
Bridget: I don't believe you.
Cleaver: I'm trying... to be a better man, Bridget, so that the next time a better woman comes along, I won't make a pig's ear of it .
1. Life is on track.
Life is on track.
2. Back off
3. Make a pig's ear of it
I won't make a pig's ear of it.

Cleever: Now that's just not true, is it? Let me start you off.
Bridget: No.
Cleever: Bridget, if you're gonna be dull, I'm going to plunge back into Mrs. Dalloway, and you know how she loves that. Dirty, dirty bitch.
Bridget: Arrived Bangkok, Very hot. Relieved at last to throw myself into serious journalistic work. Thailand has long called travelers from around the globe to take spiritual succour and karmic rest. For centuries, Western visitors have been inevitably drawn to some of Bangkok's oldest sanctuaries.
Cleever: So true. Even I, fight it as I may, am no exception. The moment I arrive here, I almost feel an irresistible pull... to this, the Temple of Tranquility. Indeed, nothing symbolizes Thailand's extraordinary fusion of East and West, of tradition and innovation, better than this. Fully body-to-body massage.
Bridget: An incredible thing about Thailand is the amazing traditional cuisine. I'm going to taste kapaluk, the ultimate delicacy. Oh, fuck! Oh, fuck! Oh, my God. My God. Um... Er... Mmm.
Cleever: How about a lovely locust? They're delicious.
Bridget: I can't. No, no, I can't.

2. girl's school
3. throw... into...

Darcy: Come in. Hello, Bridget.
Bridget: Hello, Mark. Er... I'm sorry, I'm disturbing you.
Darcy: Well, yes, a bit.
Bridget: I'll just... sit outside while you finish.
Santiago: No, no, no, please, say what you have to say, young lady.
Darcy: Mr. Santiago is the Peruvian Secretary for Trade. And Mr. Hernandez is his number two.
Bridget: Hello, hello, hello, hello, hello.
Santiago: How can we help you, young lady?
Bridget: Well, I just wanted to tell Mr. Darcy here that I heard what magnificent work he actually did releasing me from prison. Tiny, tiny misunderstanding to do with an enormous stash of cocaine. And I also wanted to say, since having found out that his girlfriend is actually a lesbian,.. that I love him. Always have. Always will. And that I'm... you know... available for dates... if he should feel so inclined.
Santiago: So, your girlfriend is a lesbian.
Darcy: Look, if you'll all just excuse us for a second... I think we should... Bridget, that was not the most romantic proposition I've ever heard.
Bridget: Well, maybe it is romantic because it's not. I mean... I know there's no music playing, and it's not snowing, but that doesn't mean that it, that it can't really be something.
Darcy: You're right. In fact, there's a question I've been meaning to ask you.
Bridget: All right. As long as it's not "Will you marry me?" Oh, God. It is "Will you marry me?"
Darcy: Well, I'm not gonna say it now. It's not the moment.
Bridget: Is it "Will you marry me?"
Darcy: The moment's gone.
Bridget: No. No, no, no. No, wait, wait.
Darcy: Bridget.
Bridget: Start again.
Darcy: No.
Bridget: Start again.
Darcy: I'm not gonna... It's...
Bridget: We've just stepped out into the corridor, and you say "I've got a question to ask you" and I don't say anything. And... And... You say...
Darcy: Bridget Jones, will you marry me?

3. step out into
“下车”就可以说成是step out of the car。

You never know what you're going to get ." Those must be comfortable shoes. I bet you could walk all day in shoes like that and not feel a thing. I wish I had shoes like that.

Woman: My feet hurt.

Forrest: Mama always said "There's an awful lot you can tell about a person by their shoes." Where they're going. Where they've been. I've worn lots of shoes. I bet if I think about it real hard I could remember my first pair of shoes. Mama said they would take me anywhere. She said they were my magic shoes.

Doctor: Alright, Forrest. Open your eyes now. Let's take a little walk around. How do they feel? His legs are strong, Mrs. Gump. As strong as I've ever seen. But his back is as crooked as a politician . But we're going to straighten him right up now, aren't we, Forrest?

Mrs.Gump: Forrest!

Forrest: Now when I was a baby, Mama named me after the great Civil War hero, General Nathan Bedford Forrest. She said we was related to him in some way and what he did was, he started up this club called the Ku Klux Klan. They'd all dress up in their robes and their bed sheets and act like a bunch of ghosts or spooks or something. They'd even put bed sheets on their horses and ride around. Anyway, that's how I got my name, Forrest Gump. Mama said the Forrest part was to remind me that sometimes we all do things that, well, just don't make no sense .

1. Wanna = want to, want a, do you want to

Wanna dance?
2. a million and a half:

I have told you a million times"也就是说我们通常使用的'百'在美国人嘴里就变成了million。所以百里挑一就变成了one in a million。
3. "Life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're going to get":

4. awful:

A.极不好的,让人很不开心的 an awful smell
I felt awful this morning.
We spent an awful lot of money on furniture.
5. as crooked as a politician:

As tall as me 比较 as strait as an arrow比作。
6. don't make no sense:

如果要表示别人的话讲的有道理你可以说:your words make sense to me。

Forrest: Anyway. I guess you could say me and mama was on our own, but we didn't mind. Our house was never empty. There was always folks coming and going. Sometimes we had so many people staying with us that every room was filled with travelers. You know, folks livin' out of their suit cases and hat cases , and sample cases. One time a young man was staying with us and he had him a guitar case.
(Forrest dances as the traveler sings "Hound Dog")
Mrs.Gump: Forrest, I told you not to bother this nice young man.
Elvis Presley: No, that's all right ma'am . I was just showing him a thing or two on the guitar here.
Mrs.Gump: Alright. Supper's ready if y'all want to eat.
Elvis: Yeah, that sounds good. Thank you,ma'am. Say, man, show me that crazy little walk you just did there. Slow it down some. "You ain't nothin' but a hound dog..."
Forrest: I liked that guitar. It sounded good. I started moving around to the music, swingin' my hips. This night, me and mama was out shoppin' and we walked right by Pitsey's Furnature and Appliance store, Guess what... (Elvis was on TV dancing the way that Forrest taught him)
Mrs.Gump: This is not for children's eyes.
Forrest: Some years later, that handsome young man who they called "The King", well he sung too many songs. He had himself a heart attack or something. Must be hard being the king...
1.Folk
Folks, we're ready to start now.
How is your folks?
He can play folk music.
2.livin' out of their suit cases:
4.ain't 是 "am not," "is not," "are not," "have not," or "has not" 的缩读形式,是不正式的语言,只在口语中出现,对出现在文化水平较低的人群中,很多人对此词较为反感。
5.This is not for children's eyes.:这就是我们常说的少儿不宜。 如果你在讲话不想让旁边的孩子听到你就可以说this is not for children's ears.

猫王,又名the king of rock and roll,是阿甘传奇经历中出现的第一个名人。 阿甘则总会说for no particular reason或者for some reason 。

Forrest: Now, my mama always told me that miracles happen everyday. Some people don't think so but they do.

Forrest: Look, I'm Forrest Gump.
Little Jenny: Just run away, Forrest, Run, Forrest. Run away, Hurry!
Bully2: Get the bikes. Hurry up.
Bully1: Look out, dummy, here we come, we're gonna get you !
Little Jenny: Run, Forrest. Run, Forrest.
Bully1: Come back here, you!
Little Jenny: Run, Forrest, Run!
Forrest: Now, You wouldn't believe it if I told you. But I can run like the wind blows . From that day on, if I was going somewhere, I was runny!
Man in store: That boy sure is a running fool .
Forrest: Now, how I told you that Jenny never seemed to want to go home? Well she lived in a house that was as old as Alabama. Her mama had gone up to heaven when she five and her daddy was some kind of a farmer.
Gump: ( knock on the door) Jenny?
Forrest: He was a very loving man. He was always Kissin' and touchin' her and her sisters. And then this one time. Jenny wasn't on the bus to go to school.
Gump: Jenny, why didn't you come to school today?
Little Jenny: Shh! Daddy's taking a nap.
Father: Jenny!
Little Jenny: C'mon!
Father: Jenny! Where'd you run to? You'd better get back here, girl. Jenny?
Little Jenny: Pray with me, Forrest. Pray with me. Dear God, make me a bird, so I can fly far, far far away from here. Dear God, make me a bird...
Forrest: Mama always said that God is mysterious. He didn't turn Jenny into a bird that day. Instead, he had the police say that Jenny didn't have to stay in that house no more . She went to live with her grandma, just over on Greek more Ave. Which made me happy 'cause she was so close. Some nights, Jenny would sneak out and come on over to my house, just 'cause she said she was scared of what? I don't know, but I think it was her grandma's dog. He was a mean dog. Anyway, Jenny and me was best friends all the way up through high school.
1. We're gonna get you! Gonna是going to 的缩读,另外get you 连读后发生同化。
2. I can run like the wind blows:
4. He had the police say that Jenny didn't have to stay in that house no more。 I ain't know nothing!
He sneaks candy into mouth(偷偷地把糖塞进嘴巴).
B. sneaker:
a sneak attack by terrorists恐怖分子的突然袭击

Kissin' and touchin' her and her sisters.

Neil Armstrong (Astronaut): That's one small step for man, are giant leaps for mankind...
Forrest: I thought I was going back to Vietnam but instead they decided the best way for me to fight the communists was to play ping pong. So I was in the special services, traveling around the country, cheering up all those wounded veterans and showin' how to play ping pong. I was so good that some years later, the army decide that I should be on the All-American Ping Pong Team. I was the first American to visit the land of China in like a million years or something like that. Somebody said would peace is in our hands. But all I did was play ping pong. When I got home, I was a national celebrity. Famous even than Captain kangaroo .
TV Host: Here he is, Forrest Gump, right here. Forrest Gump, John Lennon.
John: Welcome home.
TV Host: Can you tell us, what was China like?
Forrest: In the land of China. People hardly got nothin'at all.
John: No possessions?
Forrest: And in China, they never go to church.
John: No religion, too.
TV Host: Wow. It's hard to imagine.
John: Well, it's easy if you try, Dick.
Forrest: Some years later, that nice young man from England was on his way home to see his little boy, and was signing some autographs, for no particular reason at all, somebody shot him.
1.That's one small step for man, are giant leaps for mankind...:
I am even famous than

Forrest: You died on a Saturday morning and I had you placed here under our tree. And I had house of your father's bulldozed to the ground. Mama always said dying was a part of life. I sure wish it wasn't. Little Forrest is doing just fine. He's about to start school again soon. I make his breakfast, lunch and dinner everyday. I make sure he combs his hair and brushes his teeth everyday. I 'm teachin' him how to play ping pong. We fish a lot, and every night we read a book. He's so smart, Jenny. You'd be so proud of him. I am. He even wrote you a letter. He says I can't read it. It's Forrest's so I'll just leave it here for you. Jenny, I don't know if mama was right or if it's Lieutenant Dan. I don't know if we each have a destiny or if we're all just floating around accidental like on a breeze but I think that maybe it's both. Maybe both are happening at the same time. If there's anything you need, I won't be far away.
(later)
Forrest: Here's your bus. OK. Hey, I know this.
Little Forrest: I'm going to show that for show-and-tell because grandma used to read it to you.
Forrest: My favorite book. OK. Here you go. Hey, Forrest, I want to tell you I love you.
Little Forrest: I love you too, daddy.
Forrest: I'll be right here when you get back.
Dorothy: You understand that this is the bus to the school now, don't you?
Little Forrest: Of course, and you're Dorathy Harris, and I am Forrest Gump.
1. Little Forrest is doing just fine: 这句话的意思是小阿甘一切都好,这句话虽然简单可是中国同学很少使用,其实我们每次见面问好时都常说how are you doing 答案就可以是I am doing fine。
He brushed an old friend off.
3. I don't know if we each have a destiny or if we're all just floating around accidental like on a breeze
4. show-and-tell:

King: Excuse me, is she here?
Stepsister: She's, uh… in the back.
King: Oh, hello again. Fairy Godmother. Charming.
Godmother: You'd better have a good reason for dragging us down here , Harold.
King: Well, I'm afraid Fiona isn't really... warming up to Prince Charming.
Charming: FYI , not my fault.
Godmother: No, of course it's not, dear.
Charming: I mean how charming can I be when I have to pretend I'm that dreadful ogre?
King: No, no, it's nobody's fault. Perhaps it's best if we just call the whole thing off ,ok?
Godmother and Prince Charming: What?
King: I mean, you can't force someone to fall in love!
Godmother: I beg to differ . I do it all the time! Have Fiona drink this and she'll fall in love with the first man she kisses, which will be Charming.
King: Umm… no.
Godmother: What did you say?
King: I can't. I won't do it.
Godmother: Oh, yes, you will. If you remember, I helped you with your happily ever after, and I can take it away just as easily. Is that what you want? Is it?
King: No.
1. drag us down here
It was he who dragged me down here."
2. warm up to
I'm afraid I don't like you." I'm afraid I 'm not quite warming up to you."
3.F.Y.I.=for your information
和a.s.a.p. F.Y.I., you don't have to come tomorrow!"
a.k.a.=also known as(也可以称为)
T.G.I.F.=thank God it's Friday
4. Call off = cancel
比如:"取消会议"就是"call off the meeting。"
5. beg to differ
I don't agree with you."或 "I totally disagree." 那怎么样表达才更好些呢?"I beg to differ."或是 "You must be joking."

Annoucer: The abs are fab and it's gluteus to the maximums here at tonight's Far, Far Away royal ball blowout! The coaches are lined up as the cream of the crop pours out of them like Miss Muffet's curd and whey.
News reporter: Everyone who's anyone has turned out to honor Princess Fiona and Prince Shrek. And, oh my , the outfits look gorgeous! Look, Hansel and Gretel! What the heck the crumbs for? And right behind them, Tom Thumb and Thumbelina! Oh, aren't they adorable? Here comes Sleeping Beauty, tired old thing! Who's this? Who's this? Who's this? Oh, it's the one. It's the only...it's the Fairy Godmother!
Fairy Godmother: Hello, Far, Far away! Can I get a whoop, whoop? May all your endings be happy and... well, you know the rest!
Announcer: We'll be right back with the Royal Far, Far away ball after these messages .

1. the abs are fab(the abs are fabulous)and it's gluteus to the maximums
2. everyone who's anyone
VIP= very important person,who is who,anyone who's anyone!那么中国名流,就可以是:anyone who's anyone in china。
3.oh,my!= oh,my god!
4. What the heck...?
或者是What on earth...? What the heck are you doing?
5. Can I get a whoop, whoop?
如果用英文表达的话就是"can I get a whoop,whoop?"
6. message

You're supposed to say I have the right to remain silent. Nobody said I have the right to remain silent!
Shrek: Donkey! You have the right to remain silent. What you lack is the capacity .
Puss : I must hold on before I, too, go totally mad .
Pinocchio: Shrek? Donkey?
Puss: Too late?
Shrek: Gingy! Pinocchio! Get us out of here!
Pigs: Fire in the hole !
Gingy: Look out below!
Shrek: Quick! Tell a lie!
Pinocchio: What should I say?
Gingy: Anything, but quick!
Donkey: Say something crazy like "I'm wearing ladies' underwear!"
Pinocchio: I'm, I'm wearing ladies' underwear!
Shrek: Are you?
Pinocchio: I most certainly I'm not!
Donkey: It looks like you most certainly am are!
Pinocchio: I'm not!
Puss: What kind?
Gingy: It's a thong! Oww!
Pinocchio: They're briefs!
Gingy: Are not.
Pinocchio: Are too!
Gingy: Here we go. Hang tight.
Donkey: Wait! Wait! Wait! Ow! Ow! Hey, hey, hey! Ow!
Mouse: Excuse me.
Shrek: What? Puss!
Mouse: Pardon me , would you mind letting me go?
Puss: Sorry Boss.

1. What you lack is the capacity!
You are incapable of doing that." What you lack is the capacity!
2. go totally mad
就可以说:"He goes totally mad!" 那么除此之外,我们还会用到以下短语来表达相同的意思:"be out of mind, drive someone crazy/ mad"
3. fire in the hole
4. Pardon me
也可以作为"I beg your pardon."

Donkey: Come on, Shrek. We don't want to hit traffic .
Gingy: Don't worry. We'll take care of everything.
Mouse: Hey, wait for me. Oops !
1. enough
A: That's easy enough to say( 说得容易).
B: Enough is enough( 够了).
C: Sure enough(千真万确)!
2. bestow
bestow charity和bestow an honor是经常用到的。
比如:give me an apple。
比如:Confer a college degree。
C: Donate 一般用做捐赠来讲,比如:donate a great sum of money to the school。
3. fine prints
Some businessmen always take advantage of the fine prints to make a fast buck.
4. That's final
That's final."
5. hit traffic
I'm in the traffic jam." I'm stuck in the traffic来替换。
6. oops
Oops, I almost sent the e-mail to the wrong guy."

King: No, no, he's right. I'm sorry, to both of you. I only wanted what was best for Fiona. But I can see now she already has it. Shrek, Fiona... Will you accept an old frog's apologies... and my blessing?
Queen: Harold?
King: I'm sorry, Lillian. I just wish I could be the man you deserve.
Queen: You're more that man today than you ever were... warts and all .
Puss: Boss! The Happily Ever After Potion!
Shrek: Midnight! Fiona. Is this what you want? To be this way forever?
Fiona: What?
Shrek: Because if you kiss me now... we can stay like this.
Fiona: You'd do that? For me?
Shrek: Yes.
Fiona: I want what any princess wants. To live happily ever after... with the ogre I married.
Puss: Whatever happens, I must not cry! You cannot make me cry!
Donkey: No. No, no. Aaah! Ow. Oh, no.
Shrek: Hey. You still look like a noble steed to me.
Fiona: Now, where were we?
Shrek: Oh. I remember.
Puss: Hey! Isn't we supposed to be having a fiesta?
1. yup=yes
2.croak
The frog croaks.
3.warts and all
We still like you for what you are, warts and all.

Friends 3 《

Joey: Chandler, you have to start getting over her . All right, if you play, you get some fresh air, maybe it'll take your mind off Janice, and if you don't play, everyone will be mad at you 'cause the teams won't be even . Come on.
Chandler: Yeah, all right, I'll play.
Phoebe: Yay!!
Rachel: Let's do it! Ross?
Ross: What?
Rachel: Do you wanna play football?
Ross: Um, Monica and I aren't supposed to play football.
Joey: Says who? Your mom?
Monica and Ross: Yeah.
Monica: Well, every, every Thanksgiving um, we used to have a touch football game called the "Geller Bowl".
Chandler: No, no, no, you say that proudly.
Monica: Anyway, Ross and I were always captains, and um, it got kind've competitive and one year, Geller Bowl VI, I accidentally broke Ross's nose.
Ross: It was so not an accident. She saw I was about to tag her, so she threw her big fat grandma arm elbow right into my face. And just keep running.
Monica: To score the winning touchdown , by the way.
2. be mad at you: 生某人气,对某人发脾气,mad at这里就相当于angry with.比如,"我真的很生Bruce的气"就可以说 "I'm pretty mad at Bruce." "我生自己的气"就可以说 "I'm mad at myself."
这时我们就可以说 "Is it supposed to rain on Friday?" 也可以表示某人应该或者不应该做某件事,比如,中午12点以前要退房,这是酒店的规定,就可以对同伴说 " We're supposed to check out of the hotel by 12 o'clock."

Thanksgiving

First Thanksgiving in America
The Pilgrims, shown here celebrating their first Thanksgiving, were a group of Puritans(清教徒)who landed at Plymouth Rock(普利茅斯:位于美国马萨诸塞州东南,这批清教徒被认为是在普利茅斯海岸巨砾登陆), in what is now Massachusetts, United States, in 1620. In 1621 Governor William Bradford of New England proclaimed a day of "thanksgiving" and prayer to celebrate the Pilgrims' first harvest in America. United States president Abraham Lincoln, following the precedent of a number of states, designated a national Thanksgiving Day in 1863. Now Thanksgiving Day falls annually on the fourth Thursday of November. Today Thanksgiving is mainly a celebration of domestic life, centered on the home and family. Most people celebrate Thanksgiving by gathering with family or friends for a holiday feast.
Super Bowl

Joey: What's a matter, Ross? What you're nervous about your speech?
Ross: No! Do you wanna hear it?
Joey: Am I in it?
Ross: Uh, huh . Yeah, right after I thank everyone for giving money to the museum, I sing a song about the wonder that is Joey.
Phoebe: Hello.
Ross: Hey!
Joey: Whoa!
Ross: Wow, hello! You look great!
Phoebe: Thank you! I know, though.
Ross: You see this, this is a person who is ready to go. Phoebe you, oh, you are my star.
Phoebe: Ohh, well, you're my lucky penny .
Chandler: All right, I took the quiz, and it turns out, I do put career before men. (to Joey) Get up.
Joey: What?
Chandler: You're in my seat.
Joey: How is this your seat?
Chandler: 'Cause I was sitting there.
Joey: But then you left.
Chandler: Well, it's not like I went to Spain. I went to the bathroom , you knew I was coming back.
Joey: What's the big deal , sit somewhere else.
Chandler: The big deal is I was sitting there last, so, that's my seat.
Joey: Well, actually the last place you were sitting was in there (points to the bathroom). Soo...
口语中常用的语气词还包括yummy yummy(真香真香),ouch(哎哟),whoops(糟糕),blah blah blah(等等……)等。
2. lucky penny:a penny lying on the ground faced up. Most luck should follow immediately after picking up of it.
3. go to the bathroom:表示去洗手间,也可以用restroom。美国人很少说go to the toilet,toilet很多时候指马桶。当然我们也可以用go somewhere,go pee甚至pass water(传水),take a leak(漏),hit the John等等比较诙谐的说法。
So this guy couldn't write, big deal!"。 It's no big deal.",也可以说成"It's not a big deal."。

Janice: Why are you shopping here? You don't live in this neighborhood. Were you here waiting for me?
Chandler: Yeah, huh. I'm just uh, you know I'm just picking up some things for a party. (grabs a bag off of the shelf)
Janice: Barley ? What kind of party serves barley?
Chandler: Well, I'm sorry if my friends aren't as sophisticated as yours.
Janice: Where is this party?
Chandler: Here in Chelsea.
Janice: Who's party is it?
Chandler: A woman's
Janice: What woman?!
Chandler: (shyly) Chelsea.
Janice: Okay, you know, one of two things is happening here. Either you're seeing somebody behind my back, which would make you the biggest jerk on the planet. Or, else you're pretending that you're seeing somebody, which just makes you so pathetic that I could start crying right here in the cereal aisle. So like which of these two guys do you want to be? (Another guy walks by.)
Chandler: Can I be that guy?
[Scene: Central Perk, Joey and Phoebe are there]
Phoebe: Okay, so we got some more good rejections, lots of stuff to work on.
Joey: Okay, shoot .
Phoebe: Okay, um, oh, the zoo commercial.
Joey: I didn't get it?
Phoebe: No. They said you "Weren't believable as a human being." So, you can work on that.
Joey: Okay, what else?
Phoebe: Um, the off-Broadway play people said "You were pretty but dumb."
Joey: Oh.
Phoebe: Oh no wait, I'm sorry, that's "pretty dumb."
Joey: Look, it's okay, no, no, no, really, look um, I really appreciate this Pheebs, but I think I'm gonna have to go back to Estelle.
Phoebe: Oh.
I pick up a cold.";"我在新东方学英语","I pick up English in New Oriental School.";"沾染坏习惯","pick up a lot of bad habits,";"去机场接人","pick somebody up at the airport.";"我需要振奋起来","I need a little pick-me-up.";"我的车的加速度很棒","My car has good pick-up.";甚至"泡妞"也可以用"pick up a girl"。
2. barley:
如果形容一个人sophisticated,英文的意思应该是"someone having a lot of knowledge/experience of life, and good judgment about socially important things such as culture, art, fashion etc."
4. you're seeing somebody: 类似的date someone,go out with somebody等等都表示约会。 They are something of an item. "。
5. jerk:someone who is stupid or who does things that annoy or hurt other people生活总不可能全是顺心事儿,负面的东西也会碰到,美国人的性格总的来说straightforward,但他们的直率多建立在委婉的基础上,很少用真正恶毒的词来形容一个人。

Central Park
Central Park in New York City was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux in the 1850s. It was so popular that it inspired a series of similar metropolitan parks all over the United States.
These skyscrapers border Central Park, in midtown Manhattan, New York City. The park provides one of the few remaining green spaces in the city's dense urban landscape. It is a popular location for outdoor concerts and athletic events, including competitive foot races and recreational softball.
Broadway, Off Broadway

Broadway is one of the principal business thoroughfares of New York City, extending in a generally north-south direction. Laid out in the early 17th century by the Dutch, Broadway grew in length as the city developed from a small settlement on the southern tip of Manhattan Island. It now extends 27 km (17 miles) to the city's northern boundary in the Bronx. In lower Manhattan, where it passes through the financial district, Broadway is the traditional route over which national heroes and distinguished guests are escorted. It enters the heart of the commercial and garment district at Herald Square on 34th Street. Between 42nd Street, where it passes through Times Square, and 50th Street, Broadway forms the central thoroughfare of New York City's theater district. This stretch is one of the most highly concentrated entertainment centers in the United States, and includes official Broadway theaters, smaller off-Broadway playhouses, movie theaters, restaurants, and bars. The city of New York has attempted a major revitalization and development of the theater district since the 1980s. Also located on Broadway are Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and Columbia University.

[Scene: Joey is watching Wheel of Fortune, the puzzle is showing _oun_ Rush_ore.]

Chandler: Hey!
Joey: Wheel!
Chandler: Of!
Joey: Fortune! This guy is so stupid. It's Count Rushmore!!
Chandler: You know, you should really go on this show. All right, listen, I got three tickets to the Rangers tonight. Whaddaya say ?
Joey: I say, "I'm there!" Cool! Aw, is Ross going too?
Chandler: No, Janice.
Joey: Jan-ice. 'Cause I, just, I feel bad for Ross, you know, we…we always go together, we're like the three hocke-teers.
Chandler: You know, I may be way out on a limb here, but do you, do you, have a problem with Janice?
Joey: No, Yeeees. God, how do I say this? Oh, hi, you know that girl from the Greek restaurant with the hair?
Chandler: Ooh, that girl that I hate, eww, drives me crazy , eww, eww, oh!
Joey: Look, I don't hate Janice, she's... she's just a lot to take , you know.
Chandler: Well, there you go .
Joey: Oh, hey. Come on man, don't look at me like that, she used to drive you nuts before too, remember?
Chandler: Well, I'm crazy about her now. I think this could be the real thing. Capital "R"! Capital "T"! Don't worry. Those are the right letters.
Joey: Look, what do you want me to say?
Chandler: I want you to say that you like her!
Joey: I can't. It's like this chemical thing, you know. Every time she starts laughing, I just wanna pull my arm off just so that I can have something to throw at her.
Chandler: Thanks for trying. Oh, and by the way there is no Count Rushmore!
Joey: Yeah, then... then who's the guy that painted the faces on the mountain?
(Chandler gives him a look like "You stupid idiot!")
1. Whaddaya say:实际上是“What do you say?”,意思是问别人“这事你意下如何?”这里的ya是you的缩读,ya也可以是are you的缩读。比如ya going to the party?
2. out on a limb:limb原意是小树枝,悬在小树枝的边上是一种什么感觉?其实就是alone and without help or support,类似汉语里说孤立无援。Chandler这里用be out on a limb是指“说这话要冒点风险”,换句话说就是“可能Joey会不爱听”。类似的,go out on a limb 可以表示冒险做某件事情。比如他甘愿冒风险帮助我们就可以说“He'd gone out on a limb (=taken a risk) to help us.”。
3. drive somebody crazy:make someone feel very annoyed,都快把我给逼疯了!我们也可以用drive somebody nuts/mad/insane。比如说“咳嗽把我弄得快受不了”,就可以说“This cough is driving me mad!”
5. There you go:也是出现频率极高的词组,很多情况下相当于That's it。

Mount Rushmore
Mount Rushmore National Memorial was authorized in 1925. Located in the Black Hills of SW. South Dakota the memorial features the heads of United States presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt carved into a granite bluff. The massive sculpture was carved into the rim of Mount Rushmore 150 m (500 ft) above the valley floor and each face is 20 m (60 ft) tall. The memorial cost nearly $1 million to create. The idea for the sculpture came from South Dakota historian Doane Robinson in the early 1920s. American sculptor Gutzon Borglum designed the memorial and supervised its construction. Borglum envisioned a monument to the growth of the United States and its most important leaders and chose Mount Rushmore as the site. Borglum's original design was a sculpture of the four presidents down to their waists. Construction of the memorial began in 1927. The head of Washington was completed first, followed by Jefferson and Lincoln. Roosevelt's head was unfinished when Borglum died in 1941 and his son Lincoln completed the work later that year.

Chandler: No-no-no-no, the game's not over, we're just switching teams.
Joey: Yeah, Chandler finds me so intimidating that it's better if we're on the same team.
Ross: Right. Okay, let's play. Let's go.
Chandler: No ah, hold on a second Joe, where do Dutch people come from?
Joey: Ah well, the ah, Pennsylvania Dutch, come from Pennsylvania.
Chandler: And the other ah, Dutch people, they come from somewhere near the Netherlands, right?
Joey: Nice try. See the Netherlands is this make-believe place where Peter Pan and Tinker Bell come from.
Margha: Oh, my!
Ross: Enough with geography for the insane, okay? Let's play some ball, guys.
Joey: Whoa, whoa, no, no, I-I'm not playing with this guy, now.
Chandler: Fine with me .
Ross: Okay, y'know what, let's just cut to the chase here. Okay? Heidi, which of my boys do you like?
Chandler and Joey: What are you doing? What are you doing? What are you doing?
Margha: Which do I like?
Ross: Yeah, y'know for dating, general merriment, taking back to your windmill...
Margha: Well, if I had to choose right now, which by the way I find really weird, I would have to say, Chandler.
Chandler: Yes!!
Joey: Wait a minute! Wait a minute! She obviously didn't understand the question.
Chandler: Well, why don't you have Captain Hook explain it to her.
Margha: I'm sorry, Joey, that is my chose.
Chandler: You hear that! That is her chose, mister I'll let you have her! I win! You suck! I rule all! A mini-wave in celebration of me!!
Margha: I'm now thinking I would like to change my answer to, no one.
Chandler: Wh-what?
Margha: I now find you shallow and um, a dork. All right, bye.
1. hold on a second:英文中表示“等一下”的用法,此外还有wait a minute,hang on a second等等。 I'll just get my coat.”。
3. Oh, my!
4. Fine with me:我无所谓! 或者说Fine by me!别人约你吃饭啊,打球啊,看电影什么的,你说“没问题都行”就是“That will be fine with me.”。
5. cut to the chase:

Pennsylvania Dutch
Pennsylvania Dutch, the name commonly but incorrectly applied to German immigrants and their descendants who settled in SE. Pennsylvania. The immigrants weren't from the Netherlands, but they were called"Dutch" by other colonists, who mispronounced German word Deutsch, meaning "German." The name Pennsylvania Dutch is also applied to their language and culture.
The Pennsylvania Dutch came to the United States in the 17th and 18th centuries, mostly from a region of southern Germany known as the Palatinate. They were attracted to Pennsylvania because of its religious tolerance. The first settlers were the Mennonites, who founded Germantown (now part of Philadelphia) in 1683.
Other religious groups followed these early settlers to Pennsylvania, including Amish, Dunkards, Lutherans, and Moravians. By 1790 the Pennsylvania Dutch constituted about one-third of Pennsylvania's population. The German settlers devoted themselves mainly to farming, but they were also skillful cabinetmakers, potters, and wagon builders.

Pennsylvania Dutch Watercolor
The Pennsylvania Dutch still practice many of their traditions, including their language, which is a blend of several German dialects. The family is still the main social and economic unit, with the church next in importance. Traditional groups, such as the Amish and some Mennonites, dress in plain black or brown homespun clothing that has led to their being called the Plain People. These groups have resisted such modern conveniences as automobiles, televisions, and telephones.
The Pennsylvania Dutch are known for their hard work, thrift, and orderliness-qualities reflected in their well-tended farms. Many of these farms feature a large red barn decorated with multicolored, geometric patterns known as hex signs. Hearts, tulips, and geometric patterns also decorate Pennsylvania Dutch quilts, furniture, pottery, and other items.
Busy for living, or busy for dying.

KEATING: "Oh Captain, My Captain" who knows where that comes from? Anybody? Not a clue ? It's from a poem by Walt Whitman about Mr. Abraham Lincoln. Now in this class you can either call me Mr. Keating. Or, if you're slightly more daring, Oh Captain, My Captain. Now let me dispel a few rumors so they don't fester into facts. Yes, I too attended Welton and survived. And no, at that time I was not the mental giant you see before you. I was the intellectual equivalent of a ninety-eight pound weakling. I would go to the beach and people would kick copies of Byron in my face. Now, Mr. Pitts? That's a rather unfortunate name. Mr. Pitts, where are you? Mr. Pitts? Would you open your hymnal to page 542 and read the first stanza of the poem you find there?
PITTS: To the virgins, to make much of time?
KEATING: Yes, that's the one. Somewhat appropriate, isn't it.
PITTS: Gather ye rosebuds while ye may, old time is still a flying, and this same flower that smiles today, tomorrow will be dying.
KEATING: Thank you Mr. Pitts. "Gather ye rosebuds while ye may." The Latin term for that sentiment is Carpe Diem. Now who knows what that means?
MEEKS: Carpe Diem. That's "seize the day".
KEATING: Very good, Mr.-
MEEKS: Meeks.
KEATING: Meeks. Another unusual name. Seize the day. Gather ye rosebuds while ye may. Why does the writer use these lines?
CHARLIE: Because he's in a hurry.
KEATING: No, ding!
KEATING: Thank you for playing anyway. Because we are food for worms, lads. Because, believe it or not , each and every one of us in this room is one day going to stop breathing, turn cold, and die.
KEATING: Now I would like you to step forward over here and peruse some of the faces from the past. You've walked past them many times. I don't think you've really looked at them. They're not that different from you, are they? Same haircuts, full of hormones, just like you. Invincible, just like you feel. The world is their oyster . They believe they're destined for great things, just like many of you. Their eyes are full of hope, just like you. Did they wait until it was too late to make from their lives even one iota of what they were capable? Because you see, gentlemen, these boys are now fertilizing daffodils. But if you listen real close, you can hear them whisper their legacy to you. Go on, lean in. Carpe. Hear it? Carpe. Carpe. Carpe Diem. Seize the day boys, make your lives extraordinary.

KEATING: A man is not very tired, he is exhausted. And don't use very sad, use- Come on, Mr. Overstreet, you twerp .
KNOX: Morose?
KEATING: Exactly! Morose. Now, language was developed for one endeavor, and that is? Mr. Anderson? Come on! Are you a man or an amoeba?
KEATING: Mr. Perry?
NEIL: Uh, to communicate.
KEATING: No! To woo women. Today we're talking about William Shakespeare.
BOY: Oh, God!
KEATING: I know. A lot of you looked forward to this about as much as you look forward to root canal work. We're gonna talk about Shakespeare as someone who writes something very interesting. Now, many of you have seen Shakespeare done very much like this: "O Titus, bring your friend hither." But if any of you have seen Mr. Marlon Brando, you know, Shakespeare can be different. "Friend, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears." You can also imagine, maybe, John Wayne as Macbeth going, "Well, is this a dagger I see before me?"
KEATING: "Dogs, sir? Oh, not just now. I do enjoy a good dog once in a while, sir. You can have yourself a three-course meal from one dog. Start with your canine crudités; go to your Fido flambé for main course and for dessert, a Pekingese parfait. And you can pick your teeth with a little paw."
KEATING: Why do I stand up here? Anybody?
CHARLIE: To feel taller.
KEATING: No!
KEATING: Thank you for playing, Mr. Dalton. I stand upon my desk to remind myself that we must constantly look at things in a different way. You see, the world looks very different from up here. You don't believe me? Come see for yourself. Come on. Come on! Just when you think you know something, you have to look at it in another way. Even though it may seem silly or wrong, you must try! Now, when you read, don't just consider what the author thinks. Consider what you think. Boys, you must strive to find your own voice. Because the longer you wait to begin, the less likely you are to find it at all. Thoreau said, "Most men lead lives of quiet desperation." Don't be resigned to that. Break out! Don't just walk off the edge like lemmings. Look around you. There! There you go, Mr. Priske. Thank you! Yes! Dare to strike out and find new ground. Now, in addition to your essays, I would like you to compose a poem of your own, an original work. That's right! You have to deliver it aloud in front of the class on Monday. Bonne chance, gentlemen. Mr. Anderson? Don't think that I don't know that this assignment scares the hell out of you , you mole.

BOYS: Doing poetry is old-
KEATING: Left, left, left-right-left. Left, left, left-right-left. Left, halt! Thank you, gentlemen. If you noticed, everyone started off with their own stride, their own pace. Mr. Pitts, taking his time . He knew he'll get there one day. Mr. Cameron, you could see him thinking, "Is this right? It might be right. It might be right. I know that. Maybe not. I don't know." Mr. Overstreet, driven by deeper force. Yes. We know that. All right. Now, I didn't bring them up here to ridicule them. I brought them up here to illustrate the point of conformity: the difficulty in maintaining your own beliefs in the face of others. Now, those of you -- I see the look in your eyes like, "I would've walked differently." Well, ask yourselves why you were clapping. Now, we all have a great need for acceptance. But you must trust that your beliefs are unique, your own, even though others may think them odd or unpopular, even though the herd may go, "That's baaaaad." Robert Frost said, "Two roads diverged in a wood and I, I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference." I want you to find your own walk right now. Your own way of striding, pacing. Any direction. Anything you want. Whether it's proud, whether it's silly, anything. Gentlemen, the courtyard is yours.
KEATING: You don't have to perform. Just make it for yourself. Mr. Dalton? You'll be joining us?

Annie: But came back because Irene threatened to put the dog to sleep if he didn't.

Your mother is Barbara. Your father is Cliff.

Annie: My father has electric trains.

Walter: Really? Am I what they had in mind?

Annie: Oh, Walter they're going to love you!
1. run off with sb.
Jack ran off with his ex-girlfriend.
2. put the dog to sleep
If you don't marry me, I'll put the dog to sleep.
3. IRS: Internal Revenue Service

Revenues are collected through individual income taxes; corporation taxes; excise, estate, and gift taxes; and social security taxes.

What is a Pyramid Scheme?

Pyramid schemes now come in so many forms that they may be difficult to recognize immediately. However, they all share one overriding characteristic. They promise consumers or investors large profits based primarily on recruiting others to join their program, not based on profits from any real investment or real sale of goods to the public. Some schemes may purport to sell a product, but they often simply use the product to hide their pyramid structure.

There are two tell-tale signs that a product is simply being used to disguise a pyramid scheme: inventory loading and a lack of retail sales. Inventory loading occurs when a company's incentive program forces recruits to buy more products than they could ever sell, often at inflated prices. If this occurs throughout the company's distribution system, the people at the top of the pyramid reap substantial profits, even though little or no product moves to market. The people at the bottom make excessive payments for inventory that simply accumulates in their basements. A lack of retail sales is also a red flag that a pyramid exists. Many pyramid schemes will claim that their product is selling like hot cakes. However, on closer examination, the sales occur only between people inside the pyramid structure or to new recruits joining the structure, not to consumers out in the general public.

Pyramids are quite seductive because they may be able to deliver a high rate of return to a few early investors for a short period of time. Yet pyramid is illegal because they inevitably must fall apart.

Dr. Marsha: No, I'm not selling anything. I just want to help. I want you to know that your son called and he asked me for some advice on how you might find a new wife.
Sam: Who is this?
Dr. Marsha: Dr. Marsha Fieldstone of Network America and you are on the air.

Sam: Hey, get out here. Get out here! Come on. Now I'm not going to go through this alone.

Jonah: Talk to her dad, she's a doctor.
Sam: Of what? Her first name could be "Doctor".
Jonah: Please?
Dr. Marsha: Sam. Sam. It's his Christmas wish.
Sam: OK.
Dr. Marsha: OK. Good. Now I know this is difficult, but how long ago did your wife die?

Sam: About a year and a half ago.
Dr. Marsha: Have you had any relationships since?
Sam: No.
Dr. Marsha: No? Why not?
1. tune in
这里主持人说if you just tune in意思就是“刚刚听此节目的听众”。
2. The Ginsu knives

3. Are you with me?
Are you listening to me?
4. A year and a half
然后不假思索的把一年半说成 a year and half a year。其实这是不对的,正确的说法应为 a year and a half.

Dr.Marsha: Go on, Sam. I'm listening. Sam?
Sam: We had a pretty tough time there at first, but we're dealing with it and Jonah and I will get along just fine again, as soon as I break his radio.
Dr.Marsha: I have no doubt that you're a wonderful father. You know, you can tell a lot from a person's voice.
Sam: You certainly can.
Dr.Marsha: But something must be missing if Jonah still feels you're under a cloud . Now just a few questions: Are you sleeping at night?
Jonah: He doesn't sleep at all.
Sam: How do you know that?
Jonah: I live here, dad.
Sam: Look, it's Christmas. Maggie, my wife, she really... I mean, she loved... she made everything beautiful. It's just tough this time of year. Any kid needs a mother.
Dr.Marsha: Could it be that you need someone just as much as Jonah does?
Annie: Yes.
Dr.Marsha: Don't answer that. Let's get into that right after these messages. Sam? Jonah? Don't go away. If you've just tuned in, we're talking to "Sleepless in Seattle".
1. invade your privacy
"You're invading his privacy."
2. be under a cloud
I'm not feeling very well. How are you doing recently? Well, I'm under a cloud.
3. tough

You're too tough.

Seattle, city in west central Washington State. The seat of King County, Seattle is the hub of the sprawling metropolitan region of Greater Seattle and is the largest city in Washington. There are 3.6 million people in Greater Seattle, one of the fastest-growing metropolitan areas in the United States. This growth reflects the success of local high-technology industries such as aerospace(航空业), software, computer and electronic equipment(电子设备), medical devices(医疗器械) and biotechnology(生物工艺), and telecommunications products.

Union Lake

Becky: So then what happened?
Annie: So then I left, obviously.
Becky: You were standing in the middle of a street?
Annie: You know that dream where you're walking down the street naked and everyone is looking at you?
Becky: I love that dream.
Annie: That was nothing compared to this humiliation. Nothing.
Becky: But he saw you, right?
Annie: He saw me.
Becky: You were face to face.
Annie: He said "Hello".
Becky: He said "Hello", and what did you say?
Annie: All I could say was "hello".
Becky: Oh my God.
Woman on television: All I could say was "hello".
Becky: It's a sign.
Annie: It's a sign that I have watched this movie too many times. Such stupid... From the minute I listened to that stupid girl's show on the radio. I've been a complete jerk .
Becky: You are not a jerk.
Annie: Thank you. I'm an idiot.
Becky: You don't know who she was, Annie.
Annie: I saw her. I have a picture of her. I'll show you a picture of her. That detective in Seattle sent me a picture of her. Here. See. Huh? That's exactly what she looks like.
Becky: This is a picture of someone's back.
Annie: Well, it was her and he was crazy about her. What's this? This is from Seattle. Becky...
Becky: So I mailed your letter.
Annie: "Dear Annie, thanks for your letter. It was great. You sound neat. We're very excited about meeting you in New York on Valentine's Day and seeing if we are M-F-E-O. See you soon. Sleepless in Seattle.
Becky: M-F-E-O?
Annie: "Made for each other".
Becky: It's cute. It's like a little clue. So he can't write. Big deal. Verbal ability is a highly over-rated thing in a guy and our pathetic need for it is what gets us into so much trouble.
Annie: I am going to run back to Walter's arms, if he'll still have me.
1. That was nothing compared to...
That was nothing compared to this humiliation.
2. It's a sign.
It's a sign. 老美就会说It's a sign.
3. Jerk
I'm such a jerk!
4. Verbal ability is a highly over-rated thing in a guy
Learning English could be a highly over-rated thing.
Superstition
Superstition, a belief or practice generally regarded as irrational and as resulting from ignorance or from fear of the unknown.
1. Some tragedy will befall a person who walks under a ladder.
2. Thirteen is a kind a unlucky number.
3. Breaking a mirror indicates seven years' bad luck.
4. Good luck charms, such as horseshoes, rabbits' feet, coins, lockets, and religious medals, are commonly kept or worn to ward off evil or to bring good fortune.

Jonah: What's so great about it?
Jessica: You have to find her, Jonah. You have to go to her.
Jonah: Do you know how much money it costs to go to New York?
Jessica: Nobody knows. It changes practically everyday. How much money do you have?
Jonah: 80 dollars.
Jessica: I have 42. That will probably cover taxi cabs.
Jonah: But how would I get there?
Jessica's Mom: Honey, I have to run these tickets over to someone. Can you keep an eye on things at front until I get back?
Jessica: Sure, mom. Do you want a window seat or an aisle ?
Jonah: Window.
Jessica: Do you want a food plate?
Jonah: I don't know. Do I?
Jessica: I'd rather die than eat airplane food. I'm telling them you're twelve so that you can fly unaccompanied and the stewardess won't carry you around and stuff like that.
Jonah: Are you crazy? Who'd believe I'm twelve?
Jessica: If it's in the computer, they believe anything.
Jonah: Are you sure?
Jessica: Do you want me to say that you're really really short for your age and that they shouldn't say anything because it would hurt your feelings ?
Jonah: Yeah that's a great idea!
1. Practically
I have to work for practically 10 hours.
2. Cover

3. Keep an eye on...
Can you keep an eye on my baggage?
4. A window seat or an aisle
5.Hurt your feelings
I was hurt. I was hurt deeply.

When your child is flying unaccompanied

The purpose of this publication is to guide parents and their children in a way that will help prevent negative experiences and help ensure the child's safe and carefree journey from start to finish. Appropriate planning with the airline and your child is the best "in-flight insurance" against any unpleasant travel experiences. To assist you in this process, it helps to know that there are some consistencies among domestic air carriers.
For instance, "unaccompanied minor" is the term airlines use to refer to children younger than the age of 18 who are not traveling with an adult. All airlines require a child to be at least 5 years of age to fly unaccompanied. If the flight is not a direct one, some airlines will not allow a child younger than the age of 8 to fly unaccompanied. If the child has a direct flight, an escort fee may not be required. Airlines normally charge from $30-$60 to escort an unaccompanied minor to connecting flights. If two or more children are traveling together, most airlines will not charge an additional escort fee. And most airlines allow children 12 years of age or older to fly unaccompanied.

Walter: Look, Annie, I love you. But, let's leave that outta this. I don't wanna be someone that you're settling for . I don't wanna be someone that anyone settles for. Marriage is hard enough without bringing such low expectations into it, isn't it?
Annie: Oh, Walter. I don't deserve you.
Walter: No, I wouldn't put it that way . But, okay.
Annie: You okay?
Walter: Yeah.

Jonah: No!
Sam: Have I screwed it up for both of us?

Jonah: No!
Annie: Observation deck!

Annie: No, please, I really need to go up there.
Doorkeeper: We're closing up. No more runs tonight.
Annie: Listen, can I just take a look. There was someone I'm supposed to meet. He's probably not there. But if I don't at least look, I'll always wonder about it.
Doorkeeper: Cary Grant , right?
Annie: You know that movie?
Doorkeeper: One of my wife's favorites.
1. Settle for
2. Put it that way
3. Get to you

A. Get to you

B. Get together
Maybe we can get together sometime.

C. Get going / get moving
怎么表达呢?I think I have to get going.
4. Cary Grant

Cary Grant

Empire State Building vs. observation deck

当然这样的要求听起来有些高,就像电影中所提到 verbal ability is a highly over-rated thing in a guy. She made everything beautiful. It was a million tiny little things, if you add all up; it just meant that we were supposed to be together.

Origin of the Honeymoon Tradition
Today, the tradition of a honeymoon following nuptials (婚礼) has, long way from its original meaning. Today's "happy ending" to the wedding event is a far cry from its much different beginnings. The word honeymoon has its roots in the Norse (挪威人的) word "hjunottsmanathr" which was anything but blissful. His friends assured his and her safe keeping and kept their whereabouts unknown. Once the bride's family gave up their search, the bride groom returned to his people. This folkloric explanation presumably is the origin of today's honeymoon, for its original meaning meant "hiding".

Beatrice:Pleased to meet you.
Cinderella: You're just in time for breakfast.
Beatrice:Breakfast? Ooh, with toast and jam?
Prudence: Your Highness, a princess never prepares her own meals. That is not how things are done .
Cinderella: There are rules about breakfast?
Prudence: Of course there are rules, Your Highness. But it's certainly not your fault... that you don't know the traditions of the castle. That's what the king expects me to teach you.
Cinderella: I'm sure I can learn it in no time.
Prudence: Mm-hmm. Come along. There's no time to dally. Just do as I say, and everything will be fine. The king would be horrified... to find the hostess of the royal banquet dressed like a scullery maid! A princess must be attired like royalty.
Cinderella: Do I have to wear this all the time?
Daphne: Oh, of course not, Your Highness. You'll need something much more formal for dinner.
Cinderella: Couldn't I just wear one of my own dresses?
Prudence: Very amusing, Your Highness... but it simply isn't done.

How to greet each other?
When you meet a friend on the street, it is appropriate to stop and exchange a few words of greetings. Usually people will say "Hello" or "Hi", and sometimes they change the greeting words into questions like "How are you?", "What's up?", "How is everything going?" and similar questions. Do not try to give a detailed answer because people do not expect a story of your life. They are actually just showing their friendship to you.
When you meet each other for the first time, however, an appropriate greeting on most occasions is to say "Nice to meet you" or "It is nice to meet you". Naturally you speak the sentence with a smile on your face.
On certain very formal occasions, like when you are introduced to a very important person, you usually shake hands with the person if heshe extends hisher hand, and you would say "How do you do?" at the meantime. Remember, the answer for that is also "How do you do?", with you tone falling down a little bit.

Pride&rejudice《

Caroline: You write uncommonly fast, Mr. Darcy.
Darcy: You're mistaken. I write rather slowly.
Caroline: How many letters you must have occasion to write, Mr. Darcy. Letters of business, too. How odious I should think them.
Darcy: It is fortunate, then, they fall to my lot instead of yours.
Caroline: Do tell your sister that I long to see her.
Darcy: I've already told her once, by your desire.
Caroline: I do dote on her. I was quite in raptures at her beautiful little design for a table.
Darcy: Perhaps you will give me leave to defer your raptures till I write again. At present I have not room enough to do them justice.
Bingley: Well I think it's amazing that you young ladies have the patience to be so accomplished .
Caroline: What do you mean, Charles?
Bingley: You all paint tables and play the piano and embroider cushions. I never heard of a young lady, but people say she's accomplished.
Darcy: The word is indeed applied too liberally. I cannot boast of knowing more than half a dozen women in all my acquaintance that are truly accomplished.
Caroline: Nor I, to be sure.
Elizabeth: Goodness, you must comprehend a great deal in the idea.
Darcy: I do.
Caroline: Absolutely. She must have a thorough knowledge of music, singing, drawing, dancing and the modern languages to deserve the word. And something in her air and manner of walking.
Darcy: And, of course she must improve her mind by extensive reading.
Elizabeth: I'm no longer surprised at your knowing only six accomplished women. I rather wonder now at your knowing any.
Darcy: Are you so severe on your own sex?
Elizabeth: I never saw such a woman. She would certainly be a fearsome thing to behold.
Caroline: Miss Elizabeth, let us take a turn about the room. It's refreshing, is it not, after sitting so long in one attitude?
Elizabeth: It is a small kind of accomplishment, I suppose.
Caroline: Will you not join us, Mr. Darcy?
Darcy: You can only have two motives, Caroline, and I would interfere with either.
Caroline: What can he mean?
Elizabeth: The surest way of disappointing him will be to ask him nothing about it.
Caroline: But do tell us, Mr. Darcy.
Darcy: Either you are in each other's confidence and you have secret affairs to discuss, or you are conscious that your figures appear to the greatest advantage by walking. If the first, I should get in your way . If the second,
I can admire you much better from here.
Caroline: Shocking. How shall we punish him for such a speech?
Elizabeth: We could always laugh at him.
Caroline: Oh no. Mr. Darcy is not to be teased.
Elizabeth: Are you too proud, Mr. Darcy? And would you consider pride a fault or a virtue?
Darcy: That I couldn't say.
Elizabeth: Because we're doing our best to find a fault in you.
Darcy: Maybe it's that I find it hard to forgive the follies and vices of others, or their offences against me. My good opinion, once lost, is lost forever.
Elizabeth: Oh, dear. I cannot tease you about that. What a shame, for I dearly love to laugh.
Caroline: A family trait, I think.

Austen, Jane (1775-1817), English novelist, noted for her witty studies of early-19th-century English society. With meticulous detail, Austen portrayed the quiet, day-to-day life of members of the upper middle class. Her works combine romantic comedy with social satire and psychological insight.
It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.
However little known the feelings and views of such a man maybe on his first entering a neighbourhood, this truth is so well fixed in the minds of the surrounding families, that he is considered as the rightful property of some one or other of their daughters.

Elizabeth: I love this dance.

Darcy: lndeed. Most invigorating.
Elizabeth: It is your turn to say something, Mr. Darcy. I talked about the dance. Now you ought to remark on the size of the room or the number of couples.
Darcy: I'm perfectly happy to oblige . Please advise me of what you would like most to hear?
Elizabeth: That reply will do for present. Perhaps by and by I may observe that private balls are much pleasanter than public ones. For now, we may remain silent.
Darcy: Do you talk as a rule while dancing?
Elizabeth: No. No, I prefer to be unsociable and taciturn. Makes it all so much more enjoyable, don't you think?
Darcy: Tell me, do you and your sisters very often walk to Meryton?
Elizabeth: Yes, we often walk to Meryton. It's a great opportunity to meet new people. In fact when you met us, we'd just had the pleasure of forming a new acquaintance.
Darcy: Mr. Wickham's blessed with such happy manners, he's sure of making friends. Whether he's capable of retaining them is less certain.

Collins: Dear Miss Elizabeth, I am sure my attentions have been too marked to be mistaken. Almost as soon as I entered the house, I singled you out as the companion of my future life. But before I am run away with my feelings, perhaps I may state my reasons for marrying. Firstly, that it is the duty of a clergyman to set the example of matrimony in his parish. Secondly, that I am convinced it will add greatly to my happiness. And thirdly, that it is at the urging of my esteemed patroness, Lady Catherine, that I select a wife. My object in coming to Longbourn was to choose such a one from among Mr. Bennet's daughters, for I am to inherit the estate and such an alliance will surely…suit everyone. And now nothing remains but for me to assure you in the most animated language of the violence of my affections.
Elizabeth: Mr. Collins!
Collins: And that no reproach on the subject of fortune will cross my lips once we're married.
Elizabeth: You're too hasty , sir. You forget that I have given no answer.
Collins: I must add that Lady Catherine will thoroughly approve when I speak to her of your modesty, economy and other amiable qualities
Elizabeth: Sir, I am honored by your proposal, but I regret that I must decline it.
Collins: I know ladies don't seek to seem too eager...
Elizabeth: Mr. Collins, I am perfectly serious. You could not make me happy. And I'm convinced I'm the last woman in the world who could make you happy.
Collins: I flatter myself , cousin, that your refusal is merely a natural delicacy. Besides, you should take into account that despite the manifold attractions, it is by no means certain that another offer of marriage may ever be made to you...
Elizabeth: Mr. Collins!
Collins: ...I must conclude that you simply seek to increase my love by suspense...
Elizabeth: Sir!
Collins: ...according to the usual practice of elegant females.
Elizabeth: Sir, I am not the sort of female to torment a respectable man. Please understand me, I cannot accept you.

1. single out

If you single sb. out from a group, you choose them and give them special attention or treatment. 挑选
e.g. Mr. Collins singled out Jane first as his future wife at first, but then he switched to Elizabeth.
He was singled out by his teacher to take part in the competition.
2. hasty

e.g. They shouldn't have made such a hasty decision.
Haste makes waste
More haste, less speed.
3. I'm the last woman in the world who could make you happy.

e.g. To be a teacher is the last thing in the world that I could do.
This city is the last place that I want to live in the world.
4. flatter oneself that

If you flatter yourself that something good is the case, you believe that it is true, although others may disagree.
e.g. They flattered themselves that they would win.

Flatter
If someone flatters you, they praise you in an exaggerated way that is not sincere, because they want to please you or to persuade you to do something.
e.g. I knew she was just flattering me, because she wanted me to buy her scarf.
How flattering your company is since so many other companies are after you.
If you feel flattered by something that has happened, you are pleased about it because it makes you feel important or special.
e.g. I feel flattered by what you said.

Lady Catherine: You can be of no loss, Miss Bennet, to understand why I am here.
Elizabeth: Indeed you're mistaken. I cannot account for this honour at all.
Catherine: Miss Bennet, I warn you, I am not to be trifled with. A report of a most alarming nature has reached me, that you intend to be united with my nephew, Mr. Darcy. I know this to be a scandalous falsehood, though not wishing to injure him by supposing it possible, I instantly set off to make my sentiments known.
Elizabeth: If you believed it to be impossible, I wonder you took the trouble of coming so far.
Catherine: To hear it contradicted, Miss Bennet.
Elizabeth: Your coming will be a rather confirmation, surely if indeed such a report exists.
Catherine: If? Do you pretend to be ignorant of it? Has it not been industriously circulated by yourself?
Elizabeth: I have never heard of it.
Catherine: And can you declare there is no foundation for it?
Elizabeth: I do not pretend to possess equal frankness with your Ladyship. You may ask a question which I may choose not to answer.
Catherine: This is not to be borne. Has my nephew made you an offer of marriage?
Elizabeth: Your Ladyship has declared it to be impossible.
Catherine: Let me be understood! Mr. Darcy is engaged to my daughter. Now what have you to say?
Elizabeth: Only this. If that is the case, you can have no reason to suppose he would make an offer to me.
Catherine: You selfish girl! This union has been planned since their infancy. Do you think it can be prevented by a young woman of inferior birth whose own sister's elopement resulted in a scandalously patched-up marriage only achieved at the expense of your uncle? Heaven and Earth! Are the shades of Pemberley to be thus polluted? Now tell me once and for all , are you engaged to him?
Elizabeth: I am not.
Catherine: Will you promise never to enter into such an engagement?
Elizabeth: I will not and I certainly never shall. You have insulted me in every possible way and can now have nothing further to say. I must ask you to leave immediately. Goodnight.
Catherine: I have never been thus treated in my entire life!
Mr. Bennet: Lizzie, what on earth is going on?
Elizabeth: Just a small misunderstanding.
Mrs. Bennet: Lizzie?
Elizabeth: For once in your life, leave me alone!

Fairchild: Sabrina? Sabrina, come down.

Sabrina: Uh, she made him laugh.

Fairchild: You have to finish packing.

Sabrina: Am I witty?

Fairchild: I wonder if Paris is far away enough.

Sabrina: No, really. Do you think I'm funny?
Fairchild: Hilarious, you should host a talk show. Sabrina, the full-time observation of David Larrabee is not a recognized profession. Get out of that tree.

Sabrina: I'll be there in a minute.

David: Oh, it's just you, Sabrina.

Sabrina: Hello, David.

David: I thought I heard somebody .

Sabrina: No, it's nobody .

Fairchild: Sabrina! You've spent more of your life up that tree than you have on solid ground. You know how lucky we are that Mrs. Larrabee has friends who have a job for you, so you can have this European experience. The time in Paris will be so good for you. If your mother were alive she'd be so happy. It's what she always wanted.

Sabrina: What if he forgets all about me?

Fairchild: How can he forget someone he doesn't know exists? I don't mean that, Sabrina. I just meant there's much more to you than this obsession. I hope you know that.

Sabrina: Thanks dad. Goodnight.

Woman: I need more help out in front.

Man: Where ya goin'? It's early.

Linus: It'll take me half an hour to get out of here. I've got to check on the Tokyo market before it closes. Goodnight.

Man: Goodnight.

Mrs. Larrabee: Linus, Andrea Carlson told me you fired her son.

Linus: He's an idiot.

Mrs. Larrabee: But she was a bridesmaid at my wedding. She's one of my best friends.

Linus: This is business , mother. Listen, I gotta drop something off in David's room. When he surfaces from this weeks love of his life, tell him I put his suspenders back in his closet.

Mrs. Larrabee: You're not leaving now. You'll miss my fireworks.

Linus: It's OK mother. I had a pony ride, and I got my face painted. Goodnight. David, David. Come in.

Sabrina: I came to say goodbye.

Linus: What?

Sabrina: Don't come out! If I look at you I might not be able to get though this.

Linus: OK.

Sabrina: Please don't say anything. I'm leaving tomorrow for Paris. And I'll be away a long time. Well, I don't expect you to think about me while I'm gone. You haven't thought about me while I'm here. I just want to say I think… I think I know you better than anybody else. I mean whatever they think or say, I know the truth, that you're a wonderful person - kind and generous. And for what it's worth, know that someone very far away is thinking of you. So if there is anything I can ever do...

Linus: Could you bring me one of those little Eiffel Tower paperweights?
Sabrina: Oh my God!

1. I wonder if...
I wonder if you are available this Sunday.

2. nobody
3. What if...?
What if I am late? What if he tells everything to my parents? What if he forgets all about me?
4. This is business.
It is not your business. / It's none of your business.

Linus: He was on his way , he had a slight accident. He sat on a champagne flute.

Sabrina: They sent you to deal with me, haven't they?
Linus: They?
Sabrina: Like a lawyer in a movie. He goes to the unsuitable waitress, or showgirl, or chauffeur's daughter, and says the family is prepared to offer you a hundred thousand dollars to stay away from their son. "No", she says, "a hundred and fifty thousand." "No."
Linus: Two hundred thousand?
Sabrina: No.
Linus: A million? No self-respecting lawyer would offer less.
Sabrina: No self-respecting waitress would take it.

Sabrina: I've loved him all my life.
Linus: Have you?

Sabrina: Even though the breeze comes from the general direction of the garage?

Sabrina: So they say. They played that the night before I left for Paris.
Linus: They often do play that.
Sabrina: Yeah, he was dancing. Right here, with someone.

Also called Bill Robinson (1878-1949), American tap dancer(踢踏舞) and entertainer(演艺人员), known for his skill and originality, and one of the first black entertainers to achieve popularity among members of different races in the United States. Robinson was one of the first African American entertainers to become popular with both black and white audiences. While roles for black actors in Hollywood were severely limited at the time, Robinson managed to become a recognized film star, headlining the musical Stormy Weather and appearing in a number of pictures with child star Shirley Temple. But while Robinson's film work helped make him the best-known black performer in America, his frequent roles as domestic servants did little to earn him respect among his own people, and he was often seen as an "Uncle Tom" for his aggressively cheerful on-stage demeanor.

Linus: No, ow! Not since I made that contribution to the burn unit. It's good, very good. It's interesting, have to try it with soup sometime.
Sabrina: No one ever stops... The whole place. And it's like everything is asleep... and... I used to walk everywhere in Paris. I used to walk from Montmartre down into the center of the town. Then you find one you love and you go there everyday with your coffee and your journal, and you listen to the river.

Linus: The purpose of this meeting is to inform you that at this moment my brother, David...
David: Is late as usual. Sorry. Sorry, everybody.
Linus: What are you doing here?
David: Elizabeth and I have decided to elope .
Mr. Tyson: Really?
Linus: David, where's Sabrina?
David: So are we merging, are we all one?
Mrs. Tyson: Who's Sabrina?
Linus: You didn't go with her?
David: Well obviously not, Linus, I mean here I am, right? She's probably having her beverage service right about now.
Mrs. Tyson: Who is?
Mrs. Larrabee: Sabrina.
Mrs. Tyson: Who's Sabrina?
Mr. Tyson: The chauffeur's daughter.
Linus: Don't call her that.
Elizabeth: She was after David for a while then apparently she switched to Linus. She seems to have decided that he was the one with the power.
Linus: Is that what he told you?
Elizabeth: He told me everything, Linus.
Linus: And you didn't see her before she left? You didn't talk to her?
David: Oh sure, I said goodbye and I think I wished her luck. Maybe not, I told her I felt kind of funny accepting my brother's hand-me-downs . And I said don't take it personally, and I told her you're always been generous to your women in the past and I was sure she'd be more than compensated for whatever. See I told you, he loves her.
Mrs. Tyson: Who?
Mr. Tyson: Sabrina.
David: Is he packed?
Mack: Yes.
Linus: Is who packed?
Mack: You are, just one bag.
Linus: Wait a minute, you packed my clothes? You went to my apartment.
Mrs. Larrabee: I took her.
Mack: We were up to our elbows in your underwear drawer. It was like touching the Shroud of Turin .
David: Here, sign this. It's your authorization for the completion of the merger. And this, gives me the raise I deserve for the new position I'm assuming. There's a car waiting for you down stairs, a helicopter at East 60th, the plane ticket's been changed to the Concord. It leaves in exactly 39 minutes. If you make it, you just might beat her there.
1. elope

She eloped with an Army officer。
2. be after somebody

The police are after him for burglary.
3. switch to
The coffee drinker switch to a new brand of coffee.
4. hand-me-down

5. We were up to our elbows in your underwear drawer.

Up to one's elbow
6. beat

See if you can beat me back to the house.

Shroud of Turin
Shroud of Turin or Turin Shroud, is a 4-m (14-ft) length of linen(亚麻布) housed in the chapel adjacent to the cathedral in Turin, Italy, since 1578. For centuries, many Roman Catholics have believed it to be the shroud of Jesus, the cloth used to wrap his crucified body when he was taken from the cross. It is marked with images both front and back, apparently of a crucified man crowned with thorns, whipped, and speared in the side-the tortures Jesus is said to have suffered. Documents record that the cloth existed in France in the mid-1360s, but circumstantial evidence traces it back to Palestine at the time of Jesus.

Michael: Hey, beautiful, it's so great to hear your voice. I miss you. I've been calling you for over a month, you know...
Julianne: Well, I've been on a book tour.
Michael: I figured you were out of town .
Julianne: No, I mean my machine eats all my messages.
Michael: Or you're just averaging 30 days to return a call.
Julianne: It's less when it's you.
Michael: Look, I have to ask you something. Something incredibly important, that if you turn me down, I don't know what I'll d...
Julianne: You know, if I could just tell you one thing first. Well, this is, this is probably going to hand you the biggest laugh of your adult life . I'm sure. But I'm thinking about you, and I was remembering this unbelievably insane night we spent in Tucson, like, I don't know, a thousand years ago? And you probably won't remember this. But...
Michael: Are you kidding? I think about that night all the time.
Julianne: You do?
Michael: But it's not why I called
Julianne: It's not?
Michael: I called because I met someone.
Julianne: Well, that's great. That's great. Because you haven't really seen anybody, have you? Since dingbat Jenny Lee.
Michael: You don't understand. I've never felt this way about anybody! And she's all wrong for me!
Julianne: There is a good start.
Michael: No, no. I mean she's a junior at the University of Chicago, she's 20. Her name's Kim. Jules. you're gonna love her. She' s beautiful. And her dad is this billionaire and he owns the White Sox and some cable empire. You know I've always been uncomfortable around rich people.
Julianne: Sure.
Michael: But they're not like that, they're such wonderful people... really, salt of the earth .
Julianne: So. You've met her parents.
Michael: Yeah. Jules, we're getting married this Sunday. Hello. Hello.
Julianne: Michael, it's Wednesday night, how can you possibly be getting married on Sunday?
Michael: Actually, it all starts tomorrow. It's one of these four-day-weddings with all the traditional events, and like ten million people flying in from all over the world.
Julianne: Okay. Okay. But are you working this weekend? I mean, is that responsible?
Michael: Well, the Sox are at home and Sports is letting me do a profile on the Big Hurt. You know. Frank Thomas... wait. What do you mean irresponsible? Taking off a weekend to get married? Jules. I'm scared.
Julianne: Maybe we should talk about this.
Michael: I need you. If you can't come and hold my hand, I'll never get through this. Please come, please.
Julianne: Well.
Michael: Oh, man, I can't wait for you to meet her.
1. be out of town
通常情况下,当我们提到be out of town 的时候指的是“出差”,和be on business 的意思差不多。E.g. Where is your father? Well, he's out of town.
2. My machine eats all my messages.
The machine eats my card.
3. Hand you the biggest laugh of your adult life.
Perhaps it's gonna hand you the biggest laugh of your adult life.
4. dingbat
5. salt of the earth
The salt of the earth出自《新约·马太福音》:耶稣对他的门徒说:“Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost its savor, wherewith shall it be salted?
6. Do a profile on somebody
而do a profile on sb.
Frank Thomas

Julianne: Kimmy! Kimmy! Kimmy! I knew you're in here. The guard saw you come in!
Kimmy: Just leave me alone, you bitch!
Julianne: Kimmy.
Kimmy: Who the hell do you think you are?
Woman: Catfight !
Kimmy: You came here pretending to by my friend! And I made you my maid of honor !
Julianne: Who asked you to do that? You knew me what, eight minutes?
Kimmy: Michael trusted you, so I trusted you.
Julianne: You wanted to keep me close. You didn't trust me for a second.
Kimmy: I was right.
Julianne: Of course. You were right. But that's not my fault!
Kimmy: You kissed him! At my parents' house!
All: That's cold.
Kimmy: On my wedding day!
All: Bitch. Tramp .
Julianne: I...
Kimmy: Shut up! Now I love this man, and there is no way that I'm gonna give him up to some two-faced , big-haired food critic.
Julianne: All right. All right. Okay. All right. I kissed him. I tried to steal him. I lost. He doesn't love me. He loves you. Kimmy, I haven't done much that I'm proud of the last three days. I'd like to take you to the church, so you can walk down that aisle and marry the man of our dreams, 'cause he sure wants to marry you.
1. Catfight
2. Maid of honor
3. Tramp
4. Two-faced
He's such a two-faced guy.
5. Walk down that aisle

It all begins with engagement. Traditionally, a young man asks the father of his sweetheart for permission to marry her. If the father agrees, the man later proposes to her. Often he tries to surprise her by "popping the question" in a romantic way.
Sometimes the couple just decides together that the time is right to get married. The man usually gives his fiancee a diamond ring as a symbol of their engagement. They may be engaged for weeks, months or even years. As the big day approaches, bridal showers and bachelor's parties provide many useful gifts. Today many couples also receive counseling during engagement. This prepares them for the challenges of married life.
At last it's time for the wedding. Although most weddings follow long-held traditions, there's still room for American individualism. For example, the usual place for a wedding is in a church. But some people get married outdoors in a scenic spot. A few even have the ceremony while skydiving or riding on horseback! The couple may invite hundreds of people or just a few close friends. They choose their own style of colors, decorations and music during the ceremony. But some things rarely change. The bride usually wears a beautiful, long white wedding dress. She traditionally wears "something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue." The groom wears a formal suit or tuxedo. Several close friends participate in the ceremony as attendants, including the best man and the maid of honor.
As the ceremony begins, the groom and his attendants stand with the minister, facing the audience. Music signals the entrance of the bride's attendants, followed by the beautiful bride. Nervously, the young couple repeats their vows. Traditionally, they promise to love each other "for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health." But sometimes the couple has composed their own vows. They give each other a gold ring to symbolize their marriage commitment. Finally the minister announces the big moment: "I now pronounce you man and wife. You may kiss your bride!"
At the wedding reception, the bride and groom greet their guests. Then they cut the wedding cake and feed each other a bite. Guests mingle while enjoying cake, punch and other treats. Later the bride throws her bouquet of flowers to a group of single girls. Tradition says that the one who catches the bouquet will be the next to marry. During the reception, playful friends "decorate" the couple's car with tissue paper, tin cans and a "Just Married" sign. When the reception is over, the newlyweds run to their "decorated" car and speed off. Many couples take a honeymoon, a one- to two-week vacation trip, to celebrate their new marriage.

Julianne: Hello, George.
George: Hey, gorgeous. Having a good time?
Julianne: Not particularly, but I did what I came to do .
George: What? You split them up?
Julianne: No, I said good-bye.
George: Good girl. I'm proud of you. I'd be prouder still if you were dancing.
Julianne: Hmm, I have a big plan for dancing. Just give me 30, 35 years.
George: Mmm. The misery, the exquisite tragedy. The Susan Hayward of it all. I can just picture you there sitting alone at your table in your lavender gown.
Julianne: Did I tell you my gown was lavender?
George: Hair swept up. Haven't touched your cake. Probably drumming your fingernails on the white linen tablecloth . The way you do when you're really feeling down. Perhaps even looking at those nails, thinking. "God. I should've stopped in all my evil plotting to have that manicure." But it's too late now.
Julianne: George, I didn't tell you my dress was lavender.
George: Suddenly a familiar song. Then you're off you chair in one exquisite movement. Wondering, searching, sniffing the wind like a dapple deer. Has God heard your little prayer? Will Cinderella dance again? And then suddenly the crowds part. And there he is, sleek, stylish. R-r-radiant with charisma. Bizarrely, he's on the telephone. But then, so are you. And he comes towards you. The moves of the jungle cat. And although you quite correctly sense that he is... gay. Like most devastatingly handsome single men of his age are. You think. "What the hell... life goes on." Maybe there won't be marriage. Maybe there won't be sex. But, by God. There'll be dancing.
George: Bond. Jane Bond.
1. I did what I came to do.
I did what I'm supposed to do. I did what I came to do还有一层意思是"我做了我要做的事"。
2. Drumming your fingernails on the white linen tablecloth.
3. Wondering, searching, sniffing the wind like a dapple deer.
4. Will Cinderella dance again?
Will the Cinderella dance again?
5. Sleek, stylish, radiant with charisma.
He is sleek (朴实却不失优雅), stylish (有品味), radiant (光芒四射) with charisma (领袖气质/王者风范)。

Susan Hayward
Energetic red-haired leading lady Susan Hayward (born Edythe Marrener) specialized in portraying gutsy women who rebound from adversity. She began working as a photographer's model while still in high school, and when open auditions were held in 1937 for the role of Scarlett O'Hara in Gone With the Wind, she arrived in Hollywood with scores of other actresses. Unlike most of the others, however, she managed to become a contract player. Her roles were initially discouragingly small, although she gradually worked her way up to stardom. For her role in Smash-Up: The Story of a Woman (《毁灭》1947) -- the first in which she played a strong-willed, courageous woman -- Hayward received the first of her five Oscar nominations; the others were for performances in My Foolish Heart (《一厢情愿》1950), With a Song in My Heart (1952), I'll Cry Tomorrow (1956), and I Want to Live (《我要活下去》1958).
Although the actress maintained her star status through the late '50s, the early '60s saw her in several unmemorable tearjerkers, and she retired from films in 1964, although later returned to the screen for a few more roles. Her ten-year marriage to actor Jess Barker ended in 1954 with a bitter child-custody battle, and she died in 1975 after a two-year struggle with a brain tumor, one of several cast and crew members from 1956's The Conqueror to be stricken with cancer later in life.
