In Australia to defend her Sydney International title and a finals appearance at the Australian Open, China's top tennis player Li Na has a sense of purpose.

After becoming the nation's first Grand Slam champion in Paris last June, she recorded just six wins in the remainder of 2011.

"After the French, I think I lost the concentration on the court," Li said, adding that she feels prepared for 2012 thanks to hard work during her two-month-long off-season.

After competing in her first WTA Year-End Championships in Istanbul, the 29-year-old returned to her home in Wuhan, then traveled to Beijing for photo shoots with Chinese sponsors Taikang Life Insurance, dairy company Yili and Kunlun Mountain Mineral Water. Then she was off to a month of training in Munich, returning to Wuhan to compete in a pre-Christmas exhibition tournament called "Li Na and Friends" where she hosted Pete Sampras, Carlos Moya and Sabine Lisicki.

Li then went to Jiangmen in the south of China, where she put in hours on outdoor practice courts, before jetting off to Perth for the Hopman Cup. "In Perth, I held a baby kangaroo, but I never had this experience holding animals before ─ only my friend's baby," she said.

Despite her globetrotting, she said she won't get to explore Sydney or Melbourne. "I feel a bit sad that there is no time to look around the cities," she said. "For us as tennis athletes , it's tough because every day [we] just focus on the tournament. If we have [a] day off we also have training and are not totally relaxed."

But Li, who ousted her husband and coach Jiang Shan for keeping her awake with his snoring to the amusement of audiences tuned in to 2011's Australian Open, said she'll try to fit in some shopping after the year's first Grand Slam. "We women just like to spend but after bringing back to the home, maybe we never use, but I like the two seconds where you feel excited," she said with a laugh, acknowledging that she subscribes to retail therapy .

And like Anna Wintour showing up in Roger Federer and Maria Sharapova's players boxes or Sean 'P Diddy' Combs sitting in Novak Djokovic's corner, has Li been approached by any newfound celebrity friends for tennis' best tickets?

"In China we have Weibo, which is like Facebook, so Chinese movie stars and singers have contacted me on that, but nothing else so far," she said. She did admit she has had to alter her habits at home. "People say" That's Li Na, "so I have to change my eating time. For example, I go to lunch in a restaurant from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. to avoid peak hours," she said.

Further success in events such as the London 2012 Olympic Games could prompt further lifestyle adjustments, but Ms. Na is gladly continuing on the journey which takes her to at least 20 cities a year and has given her the title of China's most highly profiled athlete following NBA star Yao Ming's retirement.

"I like this job a lot and enjoy the tennis life, so as long as I feel my body is healthy, I will play," she said.

New York Knicks sensation Jeremy Lin was further acknowledged for his surprising play on Monday, earning Eastern Conference Player of the Week honors for games completed through February 12.

Oklahoma City Thunder point guard Russell Westbrook was named the Western Conference Player of the Week.

Lin has been an unexpected revelation for a maligned Knicks team of late. Without the services of All-Stars Carmelo Anthony and Amare Stoudemire, the undrafted point guard led New York to a 4-0 record last week, averaging 27.3 points, 8.3 assists and 2.0 steals over that span. He became the first player in NBA history to record at least 20 points and seven assists in each of his first four starts.

The Harvard graduate highlighted his unprecedented rise to prominence with a 38-point performance in a win over the Lakers on Friday.

Westbrook averaged 30.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 2.5 steals last week, helping the Thunder to a 3-1 mark. He registered a career-high 15 field goals in a loss to the Kings on Thursday.

NEW YORK — The Lin-ning streak is over. And Jeremy Lin's sloppiness was one of the problems. Lin committed nine turnovers, tied for the most in the NBA this season, and the New York Knicks had their seven-game winning streak stopped with an 89-85 loss to the New Orleans Hornets on Friday night. Lin scored 26 points, but his turnovers nearly doubled his five assists and the Knicks lost for the first time since Linsanity began, falling back below.500 at 15-16 heading into a matchup with the defending NBA champion Dallas Mavericks on Sunday. Trevor Ariza scored 25 points for the Hornets, who have won three in a row after a 4-23 start. Marco Belinelli added 17. Amare Stoudemire had 26 points and 12 rebounds for New York.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg was spotted at today's Knicks win over the Mavericks at Madison Square Garden, suggesting that the tech mogul may have a case of Linsanity.

ESPN, which broadcast the game, showed him sitting in the stands smiling. The NBA's official Twitter account also tweeted a photo of Zuckerberg greeting famous Knicks fan Spike Lee.

The 27-year-old tech billionaire lives in Palo Alto, Calif., the same town where Lin grew up and attended high school.

Lin attended Harvard from 2006-07 and from 2009-10 so the two didn't overlap in their time at the Cambridge, Mass., school — Zuckerburg left Harvard for Silicon Valley in 2004.

Jeremy Lin is going on offense to protect Linsanity.

The Knicks sensation this week applied for trademark rights to Linsanity, The Huffington Post learned late Friday after obtaining his application. One of Lin's attorneys confirmed it. "We're prepared to protect his intellectual property rights," said Pam Deese at the Washington, D.C., law firm of Arent Fox. She declined to comment further. Lin paid a filing fee of $1,625 to cover use of the trademarked term on all manner of apparel, including underwear. In a detailed listing of goods, the filing seeks to protect its use on everything from action figures to beverage sleeves and backpacks.

According to the document, Lin filed his application on Feb. 13, several days after two California men entered the cash-in derby to trademark Linsanity. But Washington, D.C., trademarkattorney Josh Gerben told The Huffington Post that those claims will likely turn into a procedural air ball, costing the two men time and money. Lin's move with the U.S. Patent and TrademarkOffice could also jeopardize an online venture of one of the men, Andrew Slayton. By selling "Linsanity" T-shirts on his Linsanity.com website, Slayton is playing fast and loose with certainprotections, Gerben said. He believes the marketing tactics of Slayton and his website potentiallyviolate the trademark rights of the New York Knicks and the publicity rights of Lin, whose sudden success with the Knicks has generated the term Linsanity.

China may be the world's most populous country ,and it won the most gold medals at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. But its prowess at soccer is lamentable. China is ranked 84th in the sport's world standings.

Chinese are huge soccer fans, and hundreds of millions are expected to tune in to the World Cup, with all the matches broadcast live on public TV. But the Chinese won't have their own team to root for.

世界杯 "Chinese have a reputation of being good at math, but they have trouble explaining why a population of 1.3 billion cannot produce a winning 11-member soccer team," said Xu Guoqi, a history professor at the University of Hong Kong.

Journalists and soccer fans offer a number of reasons, most often money issues, politics, corruption and culture, and sometimes a combination of the four.

Even though China now boasts wealthy companies and individuals who could sponsor teams, there is little support as long as Chinese teams are perceived as perennial losers. "This is a very bad circle," Ma said. "No results, no money. No money, no results."

Few Chinese children are playing soccer. Some sports journalists and fans attribute the lack of interest partly to schools de-emphasizing sports in general and the lack of playing venues in the country's dense urban areas. "What can Chinese kids do?“ said Fan Huiming, 61, a Chinese soccer fan who grew up watching matches at Beijing's Workers' Stadium, which was built in 1958 near his childhood home. "If they play soccer, the ball may fly directly into the glass of someone's home."

For young people, soccer has largely been eclipsed by basketball, thanks in part to Chinese NBA players who are treated like rock stars. Journalists and fans say NBA's aggressive campaign of marketing and merchandise in China has helped swell the popularity of basketball. By comparison, they noted that international soccer does not even have an office in China.

Rowan Simons, a Briton who came to China more than two decades ago and discovered he wasn't able to play weekend soccer, has been on a campaign to popularize the sport here. Simons said the main problem is that soccer elsewhere has traditionally started as a series of neighborhood clubs, but in China, "there's virtually no football at community level".

"Football in China can only succeed if it's a grass-roots activity organized by the people," he said.
