The Tempest and 2012 London Olympics Opening Ceremony
The verses read in the beginning of the opening ceremony of 2012 Olympics is from The Tempest a comedy by Shakespeare.
These verses are read by Kenneth Branagh, an actor and film makers famous for his adaptation of Shakespeare. (BTW, he is also Professor Gilderoy Lockhart in the second Harry Potter movie)


The verses are from Act III Scene II of The Tempest

Be not afeard: the isle is full of noises,
Sounds, and sweet airs, that give delight, and hurt not.
Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears; and sometimes voices,
That, if I then had wak'd after long sleep,
Will make me sleep again: and then, in dreaming,
The clouds methought would open and show riches
Ready to drop upon me; that, when I wak'd,
I cried to dream again.

Translation: 不要怕。这岛上充满了各种声音和悦耳的乐曲，使人听了愉快，不会伤害人。有时成千的叮叮咚咚的乐器在我耳边鸣响。有时在我酣睡醒来的时候，听见了那种歌声，又使我沉沉睡去；那时在梦中便好像云端里开了门，无数珍宝要向我倾倒下来；当我醒来之后，我简直哭了起来，希望重新做一遍这样的梦。

Notes:
afeard：afraid
isle：island, often used as a part of the name of an island
twangling：this word is not used by people today, it comes from the word, twang
hum：make continuous low noise, 哼
mine：在Early Modern English（或称 Late Middle English）中，mine会代替my 放在元音开头的名词前，但仍然表示my的意思。
wak'd： 应该waked，现代英语用woken。
methought：it seems to me

As you know, because of the time difference, I didn't watched Olympics Opening Ceremony. But from your post. I have learnt a lot. Thank you!
My English isn't very well, maybe there is a mistake.

I planed to watch live opening ceremony this early morning, but I didn't wake on time, so I watched the
tape-delayed programme as well.

I like those sentences from Shakespeare. Thanks very much for your introduction.
